Last week I bought some memory (512mb SDRAM which is the right memory for my computer) and tried to install it this afternoon. It was fitted corectly by me but as soon as I tried to trun my computer back on, it wouldnt load windows up. Took out the memory and it promptly worked again.

Anyone know what could be the problem, I do need the memory so XP will run efficiently

thanks in advance

Any helpful beeps or anything?
At what point exactly does windows fail to load?
What other memory does the pc have in it?
If you pull the old, and just run with the new, what happens?
What PC is it?
Does the BIOS detect the new memory - can you even boot as far as the BIOS?
Have you defaulted the BIOS (once had a pc do refuse to post for some reason, defaulted the BIOS with the new memory out, then put it back in, all was fine)

A few questions there I'm afraid, but your original post is fairly vague for a definite answer to be forthcoming...

Nope
When i first tried it it went to windows screen and never advanced. Every time after that it suggested starting in safe mode but after that window just got a blank black screem
It has an older memory stick that was bought a few years ago not sure what size it is, but has total of 197m Ram
Not tried that yet
Old AMD Athlon, used www.crucial.com and got -
Maximum Memory Capacity: 768MB
Currently Installed Memory: 0MB
Available Memory Slots: 3
Number of Banks: 3
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
CPU Family: AMD Athlon processor Model 4, Stepping 2
CPU Speed: 1010 MHz

Not sure

Love the currently installed memory!

197 is a tad odd - 128 + 64 plus misreporting, perhaps? The spec and the currently installed memory is helpful - the 768Mb max memory implies 3 * 256Mb is yer limit. What size is the stick you're trying to install? And, equally importantly, how many chips on it and what are they labelled (some motherboards don't like individual chips about a certain size, nor do the like more than a certain number of 'pages', nor being double sided - which is nothing to do with what the SIMM looks like. Got a link to the spec of the memory you bought, and another for the motherboard?

I agree 197 is a strange figure, unless the board has onboard RAM (common enough in the day) or has one of the weirdest onboard video cards I've seen (256MB pool - 59Mb for video... very odd). I'd suggest that something very funky is going with the mobo/RAM.
Considering the age of this voard and the implied max size I think the 512MB DIMM is to much for the beast, see if the shop will swap it for 1x or 2x256MB units.

I'd also advise looking at how much it would be to get a new base unit from somewhere like Novatech shipped to you... something smells like it's on it's last legs as things stand.

As above, 512MB is too big - your slots can take a maximum of 256MB each.

I've done a similar thing myself and as you say as soon as Windows try to load, it turns off...
