I was in a cab last night on my way to meet some friends when two police motocycles pulled up alongside ata set of trafficlights. When i looked over, i saw both officer were carrying sidearms?!

I shouldn't really be surprised i guess, but i would have thought that those were two different specialties, firearms and motorcycles? Just surprised me.

Are you sure they were firearms?

Motorcyclists tend to wear covered baton/cuffs holders to keep the weather out of the cuffs/baton. It would be quite easy to mistake these for a holster I expect.

Yeah i suppose they oculd have been DPG, seemed odd as it looked like they were just 'on patrol'. Maybe it's the Government trying to arm the polcie on the sly.. :P

They were definately sidearms, they were only a few feet away, could have put the window down and touched it.

Agreed.

I was once in a local petrol station one evening and I noticed a police officer in front of me paying at the till had a sidearm. It had a kind of 'bungee cord' attached to it and to his belt. He was engrossed in conversation and I do remember thinking that if I was that way inclined and if I had quick hands it would be quite easy to flick open the 'popper' on the holster, pull the gun out and use it to 'detain' the officer in order to hold up the place to get some drug money. That sounds extreme but the petrol station is right next to a notorious estate where in the petrol station they even have to put jars of coffee behind the till as they are stolen and sold for drugs.

After watching a programme about Tourette's and the fact that the more 'taboo' the thought the more uncontrollable the impulse to act it out is, without any homour whatsover, I am glad that this is a syndrome which does not affect me. It must be very difficult to live with - and in a situation like this very dangerous.

William Hague lives near Barnsley, no? Whether he is worthy of SEG/DPG is another matter...

Yep Roy Mason was the home seceratery when the IRA was at their worst and lived in Barnsley probably still does. If he is still alive he will be in his 80s. He lived opposite my friend and had armed gaurds all the time them. never saw police bikes though. Usually armoured Rovers and Jag with range rover escort.
