Tyres with "N1" on them
Discussion
This was discussed briefly the other day, I am sure someone said that the Michelin Pilot Sport Tyres with "N1" on the label are old design tyres now.
I have just got two sets from costco and they are "N1" with like a lightning stike tread pattern down one edge. I know they only arrived from Michelin on todays delivery, so whats the deal their then. A photo (cant find it) was posted and someone said they are upto N4 now for porsche. Maybe Michelin flirting old stock through the costco chain? or still making N1 anyway. Just curious if anyone has a clue? Picked mine up from Trafford Park today and they had loads of Porche rubber because it was the last day of 20%. Ive got two sets stacked in the kitchen and the house stinks like..err a tyre factory I guess...cool I say

!!This has doubtless been asked and answered in the past but, since the subject of N ratings has come up again, I'll pose it here....
Should I be concerned that I've got N2s on the front axle and N3s on the rear? They're both Pirelli P Zeros, albeit the rears are Rossos while the front are another sort (they have Direzionale on there, if that assists....)
I'm assuming this is not a problem - I think the previous owner had them put on at the same time, although I suppose it does beg the question why he didn't put the same rubber on all round. Hmmmm

I asked a similar question of my insurance company and was told that they MUST all be the same (N1 in my case).
Whether or not this is bullshit I don't know. However, it's a big chance to take to test the theory.
I've just fitted a set of Pilots Sport N1 to my 986S replacing Dunlop SP9090s. Michelins are leagues better, much more grip, noticeably less noise and especially better handling. The stiffer side walls really make the car sharper.
The best tyres I could of got for my car are Michelin SP2s but Micheldever (recommended) where I bought the tyres have had SP2s in my size on order since September. They said it was very difficult to source SP2s in any size. I did check with some of the other major tyre fitters and got much the same story.
Before I purchased I went through the Michelin catalogue to see what N rating was the latest for the PS1 and it is N1.

i just based my info on this
Tyres which have undergone the tests and obtained validation by Porsche are then accredited with an "N" specification.
The Porsche specifications are as follows: N0, N1, N2, N3, etc. These indications on the side of the tyre mean that these tyres have been accredited by Porsche. The numbers following the "N" code: 0, 1, 2, 3 represent the various accreditations by Porsche over time. This means that N0 was the first tyre accredited. Thereafter, based on the modifications made on the tyre, this same reference is identified as N1, then N2, etc. When a new tyre is selected by Porsche, the index starts at N0 once again.
question - which manufacturers still available N tyres for Porsche 993 and 996 ??

I just looked in my Porsche / Michelin catalogue.
For you 997 owners on 18s the latest version is N3. For 19s the latest version is N1
996 owners 17s the latest version is N2. For 18s its is N1
993 owners 16s and 17s are on N2. 18s are N1.
I can't gaurantee that this informatio is up to date. Best to check on the Mich website.

I know that Michelin PS1 is 'N' rated. PS2s - with a more up to date tread pattern - are also available in Porsche sizes but as they have not been Porsche approved are not 'N' rated. This is not to say they are not suitable for the Porsche marque, just that they have not been officially approved. I'm off to Costco tomorrow to order some PS2s for my 993...
