I'm looking to get an additional 1GB of RAM on my PC and have noticed that I can get the right stick with either 1GB on it or 2x512mb on the stick.

For example a 2x512mb stick - here

And a 1GB stick - here

Any real difference between these, they are both 1GB in size but comprised of different on board chips to make it up?

Open the machine up and see how many free slots it's got for the RAM. Also check to see if they are different colours.

2 or 4 banks, made up of 2 different coloured sockets indicates dual channel abilities. All black = nowt special.
If you have different coloured slots and the existing RAM is say 1GB PC3200 then dropping another 1GB PC3200 module in to the same coloured slot in the second bank will work wonders.

if it's all black then grab a compatible and similar rated module and dump it anywhere, you could even by 2x512MB sticks if it'll be cheaper.

I just want to know what the difference is between a single stick with 1gb on it and a single stick with 2x512mb on it as I posted the links above.....other than £2 of course

I know what I have in my machine, what type I need and what I have free thanks

The 2x512mb product is exactly that - 2 physically separate sticks of 512Mb memory to make up the 1Gb so you would need 2 slots free to use it.

The other product is 1Gb on 1 physical stick of memory.

Unless I'm missing the point completely, the clue is in the product description (and picture)!

Sorry, didn't look too closely at the photo

I just read the description thinking it was a double sided stick 1x512 on each side, the other having a single 1GB on one side.

I'll shut up now.
