Hello all,

today at around 70 miles per hour I noticed a sudden loud drone, which I thought was just excessive noise from the road surface, or a blown exhaust box. But when I slowed to around 50 I found that the stering wheel began to wobble. I pulled off the motorway and into a car park where there was a Halfords service centre. When parking the car, it felt like the tyre was flat as I got a rubber 'burring' noise when I turned the steering wheel. I went into the Halfords service centre and they put it up on the ramp for an inspection. With one chap following shouted instructions from below, the mechanics tried to find the fault. Tens of left and right wheel turns later, they declared that they couldn't find anything. [Prior to going on the ramp, he agreed when the car was stationary, there was noise that we both thought was coming from near the right wheel]. I took the car for a run and it didn't occur again, except again when I was moving slowly in the car park.

I have never had a 4wd car before, but as the mechanic couldn't find anything discernably wrong with the steering or the suspension, could it be the 4wd system at the front that might be 'iffy'?

I bought the car two weeks ago and so will be contacting the independant, but I suspect I will be told to take it to someone who can do some diagnostic work and claim.

Anyone got any ideas?

Wheel bearing? Brake disc/pad deposit?

Difficult to say. The usual suspects would be damaged tyre, wheel bearing deposit on disc brake as outlined by the previous poster.

I would get somebody that knows 993s to put it up on a ramp and check it out (no offence to the Halfords guys). In the meantime if you can jack it up run your hands over the tyre treads and sidewalls (especially the inside) to confirm there are no bulges or tears.

Good luck, let me know what you find as i have a 993 C4 as well.

Could very well be a wheel bearing on the way, my 964 is doing a similar thing at the mo, (same front suspension) 90% of the time it is fine 10% it drones, I've got a new bearing for it they are about £16.

Owing to time restraints I haven't had time to take it to a specialist but had a look myself, ably assisted (or rather, led by) my brother. Reckon it is simply a steering rack bush, and the tracking is out. Don't see it being anything else. Everything else is rock solid.

It is not serious, can't be. Have driven it 500 miles since it first occured and it hasn't reoccured...
