TVR 350i against other super cars of the time
Discussion
Found this interesting artical might be of interest. Seems the TVR gets beat everywhere except lower rpm for max. bhp and 50-70, and of course engine size.

Hi Thomas, congratulations you are my first post! been meaning to set up an account for ages to join in with you guys but been waiting for a spare sunday when not fixing my 350i! It's not the most reliable of cars i have ever owned!
Any way, as promised, the 'interesting article' is indeed 'interesting'. However i prob would not get too down over the article, as the majority of the cars are higher range and there for probably not all that comparable.
From personal experiance of having a lotus esprit I have found that my 350i is so much more fun!

I had an S3 Esprit and a TVR 390SE: I kept the TVR and sold the Esprit. I don't doubt that on a track the Esprit would hammer the TVR, but for real-world use (and sense of occasion) I prefer the 390.
If you just want to go really fast, buy a bike

The great thing about the Lotuses is the handling is good, it'll go round corners much faster. However, in the real world, as you say, pure grunt is much more practical. The reason is simple: unless you can see around the corner and a couple of hundred yards past that, theres no point in cornering quickly on public roads. Far better to have a point and squirt kind of car that can get around the corner OK and be ready to stop quickly, then on the straights where you can see ahead outdrag the Lotus types.
As for bikes - I remember overtaking one on the way to Nottingham on the A52 on the inside with my 350i. Not many people have the bottle to get the pegs down.....

... but the first time you come to a queue the bike would sod-off to the front and leave you all behind...

Joining a bike club and getting advanced training will increase your odds of survival to 50:1! I do like the idea of bikes but don't like the thought of what happens when a car and bike come together. Bikes are perfect for fun if you've got your own private test track or failing that live in Scotland
...ok I'll get off my box now. My bike friends like the wedge, and are amazed by it. Especially when pulling away at traffic lights with a bike next to you, and it really has to go for it to stay ahead! Suddenly the friend realises TVRs are bloody quick (in the dry). Of course the two cannot be compared, but carwise it gives a large portion of bike experience in a car (they say). I take that as a great complement, and agree with them on this.
In many tests the wedge is number one in noise. That is fine by me, as I can live with the rest of the niggles only for that.

... that's exactly what happened on that journey, we got to a straight where there wasn't enough room for me to overtake, and I waved him past. All good clean fun!

...ok I'll get off my box now. So do you spend all your road time on full throttle not giving a thought to what's going on around you? I doubt it. You can't drive a car that way and survive any more than you could do the same on a bike. If you're competent in a 'performance' car (and can ride a bicycle) then you can cope with a motorcycle. Try it
It's not the fact that you (can or do) go faster on a bike (though of course when circumstances permit...
) but that things don't hold you up like they would in a car. Put it like this: if I had to get from one end of the Lakes to the other in a hurry on either of my bikes, the TVR or the Transit, it'd be bike, van, TVR. Mainly because the van has better visibility than the car but not the manoeuvrability of the bike.
The best tool for the job depends on the job itself
Of course if there was a Wedgefest around, the decision would be simple...

I've seen your transit, and I'm sure you drive it like a bike
2 wheels round the corners. Good job it not white
Wish I had the nerve to get back and use the GSX properly as has done a massive 10 miles since mot in August, 5, back home and 5 to the new house
Now what you need for that lake trp is the mondeo 2.0 td, 6 speed 130 as goes faster than a van and handles better than a bike, even the 4 wheel drive through the fields is great

Uh oh just realised no 4 wheel drive just a company hack

No argument intended
I
at these gungho types who swear blind they ride like they're always on a track: you know damn well they're not (see Adams remark about getting pegs down) in the same way as anyone who claims they do warp speed everywhere in a TVR is either lying or suicidal

A good point to make is that the other cars I think I am right in saying are top of their class where as te 350i isn't they should have had a 450 up there.
When did the 450 become available?
1989 I think
They should have used the 390SE/420SE and see how they compare then
