Just been on a lovely run in the sunshine to Fountains Abbey but noticed an odd noise coming from behind the seats. It is related to the wheels turning and sounds a bit like the chugging noise of a steam engine so as speed up so does the noise and same when slowing down. Haven't used the car for 2 or 3 weeks if that may be relevant? Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks very much.

Assuming you haven't got next door's cat wrapped around one of the drive shafts, maybe one of the pads isn't freeing off the disk?

If it was next door’s cat wrapped around a drive shaft I would expect more of a dull thud thud thud each time it made contact, obviously that would be after the initial eeeeeowshreechhee type sound. I would go with the pad not clearing theory.

When faffing about with the rear suspension once I managed to get some debris behind the disk or hub or something, can’t quite remember which but it ran slightly off true as a result and produced a similar symptom.

If its a pad getting stuck take a look at the discs, when this happened to me I had no unusal sounds or smells and only noticed it when I was checking tyre pressures and noticed one of the discs ws blue with the heat that had been generated !!
