First, big blower then brush for dust and things, then (after making sure thre's no grit left on the lens) lens cloth. Then I use a LensPen for more difficult-to-shift smears. Personally I can't remember the last time I had to use any cleaner/solution.

yikes

Christ on a bike do not go anywhere near a lens with household cleaners.

I never clean my lenses. I always protect front element with UV filter and disperse dust with a blower brush. I have some lovely lens cloths supplied by a holographer friend for cleaning away any additional marks. They are similar to the ones supplied by opticians. ALWAYS make sure no dust is present before wiping glass as this may scratch the surface. If you are careful, the rear elemnet should never need wiping.

I have a Pentax micro-fibre cloth but have not had to use it for a long time as I too keep my lenses under a UV filter. There also used to be available anti-static brushes for removing the worst grit beforehand. Try as far as possible not to touch any lens element. Cleanliness means prevention but I realise it is not always achievable.

mind you it is tempting to say 'spray with Cillit Bang and then clean up with a Brillo pad' isn't it ?
