Water - Header tank

Okay, this is a been and gone problem but I thought I'd ask in case anyone else had a similar experience.
If you tighten the header tank a bit too much, does it piss water?
I checked my water one day as part of an all over diagnostic and re-tightened the header tank cap as hard as poss by hand - it then blew steam a little on a mid-length drive. Leven checked it but found the seals and T-bar to be fine. On the way home it pissed water onto the engine, cue big steam and had to stop after a few miles. After that I was on a litre of water per mile refil for 5 days or so before the 12k service @ Leven (thankfully I only live 2.3 miles from work).
Then the day before the service I tightened the cap after a refil and I must have been feeling extra strong that day as I tightened it more than normal and it 'popped' and went down a step on the corkscrew. So I decided "ooops maybe too tight" and just tightened it to first resistance. Water problem resolved, Leven pressure tested the whole system and it was fine, not lost any water since - Is it a know problem that if you overtighten the header cap, even before it pops and drops a coil on the corkscrew that this causes mass steam and water issues?
