Thruxton track days??
Discussion
Thruxton has a race school doing "experiences" and it is used almost exclusively for that. Certainly over the last few years there have been almost no "track days" where you can use your own car.
I heard a rumour that this year there may be some car track days again - but this is scuttlebutt with no evidence I'm afraid...

There will be a few (very few) trackdays run at Thruxton this year. The big problem is that the noise limit will be 90db (yes, ninety) which will rule out a lot of the popular trackday cars (most 911s & M3s for a start).
But, I suppose the best thing to do is find a quiet car and book a place because the more support they get the more likely there will be more of them in the future and it's possible with enough demand they may find a way to run them for noisier cars.
It's such a great track...

Who is organising 'em? I'd LOVE to do a day in my own car at Thruxton. I drive a Boxster S and its quiet so I think I'd be OK....

Oh ho! Another possibility. I really would like to drive Thruxton properly. I've only been around in a race school car before...

90db, whats the point?
FFS the A303 runs along the track and the cars on there aren't noise tested !!

The cars are static tested before being allowed on track but it is kinda nuts... Im learning to fly at Thruxton and the aircraft fly right over the houses at the end of the runway at about 500 feet!
I *wish* I could enter that track day but there is no way in HELL I will get the GT3 to pass a 90dB noise limit!
Melindi - will the 90dB definitely be in force??

Went along to watch a track day at Thruxton last summer. I was there around and hour, and in that time there were two rather serious accidents - both cars write offs, some minor injuries. Thruxton is very fast, therefore when it goes wrong, it goes wrong very quickly at very high speed. Its also deceptivly difficult to drive as the long curves are more complex than inexperienced drivers realise. Also, the 'wide-open' ness of the place makes people think yhere not much you can hit. But alas thats wrong, theres plenty to hit if you get onto the grass at 120+mph.
That said, as a local resident, enjoyed quite a few impromptu track sessions there during the winter months, as the gates are never locked and you can literally just drive onto the curcuit, do 10 laps, and bugger off. Not even any security. However, last time I did this the local plod turned up in force and told us to sling our hooks.... :-)

Hmmm... well I wouldn't advocate the impromptu lapping, but I would agree that Thruxton is not an easy circuit to learn and is very fast (Church is the fastest corner of any UK circuit).
So if you're thinking of doing one of these trackdays I would strongly recommend booking a session with an instructor at the beginning of the day. I'm sure Goldtrack will be using instructors from Thruxton and with a few laps of them showing you the correct lines you'll be much better prepared for your day.
It is very easy to lose your way around the back of the circuit if you don't know it and as has been said if you run out of road anywhere after The Complex, you'll be going at a fair speed so it could be costly...
