Time has come to do something about my faux wood dashboard. The paint is peeling and I am unsure whether to go for an alloy dash or veneer it. What have other people dont and what kind of cost are we looking at?

On another note I re-fitted all my rubber gaskets on the doors roof and bonnet over the weekend and found that the door gasket off an old transit is perfect. Found some in an old dissused transit cleaned it up and with some help it now looks really tidy. Cost £0.00. winner.

I'm thinking of flocking mine in a trim matching grey.

Hi mines covered in the same material as the surrounding dash and I think it looks great. See My Photo Album for a pic (not a very good pic but I could add more if you wanted..)

I recently bought some matching "Ambla" when being dragged around shops looking for curtains etc by the missus... almost made the experience worthwhile...

I also have my dash in bits at the mo. I am a little shocked at the quotes I have had to reveneer the switch panel. I could by a new stereo or a complete set of brakes for the same money..!!

Has anyone tried the walnut look stick on Folio Tec film that is sold at Halfords or Demon Tweeks with any success?

How about this, it would look good if put on right, and cost very little if it went wrong.

I'm convinced that contact adhesive is the right stuff to use with veneer. Don't do what I did though and use ordinary evosnot. I only did the switch panel and one year on I can see that there are a couple of small bubbles showing.

If you are doing a dash make sure you get a single piece of veneer to do the whole job. Matching and joining takes some skill and with a steel substrate I'm conviced that you'll eventually get a gap at any join.

I've just re-veneered my dash with some walnut veneer (see Clarenceboddiger above). The wood was flat and easy to glue to the original metal with some evo stick. Total cost £32

Just completed mine with an oak burr veneer backed onto ply and araldited to the original steel dash. This method should avoid the veneer crumbling over time with the variations of heat. Couple of photos:

Thanks Colin. I'll see how its looking in a year or two but still have enough veneered ply left over for another two sets. Either that or set up in business!

Beer money and the satisfaction of a good job done. Leaving the misery of raw knuckles from taking off and refitting the dash to the owner

I got a customer of mine to do mine with a burr effect lacquer and gloss clearcoat.

I think it was £200, finally he said it was easier to make a new panel cut to the sahpe of the old one rtaher than retrim the old one. I could see why later as the thin quality of the original makes it difficult to work on.

I have some good pics and could arrange for the same job to be done for anyone. However i cannot just see how to post a pic here.

Has any one tried that lot who advertise in the club mag? how much do they charge at "trade" rates - I dont trust myself with neatly cutting and pasting thin woody bits whihc dont use spanners...
