Ive been using my Fuji S5600 since xmas and although I love the compplexity in comparison to my old point and click camera and love the fact that I can use filters and things, I am rather dissapointed at the quality of photos it produces!

I can get some good shots with it, this weekend I managed to snap some good static car shots at the TVR meeting.

The only problem is, the camera seems to produce a massive amount of noise and speckling...something which I know you get with Jpegs, but compared to the little 3.2MP Fuji A330, its ridiculous!

Is there any way of avoiding this speckling??

How come the supposed higher end S5600 does it to a higher degree over my entry level A330 P&C???

Any advice would be highly welcomed

Have you got the ISO setting cranked up? If you accidentally leave it on a higher level that can produce a lot of noise...

The measure of a good digital camera is that it takes good photos at 400.

also check the image quality settings (if it has them) it could be set to large but rough = crap quality but smaller image than large fine pics

Yep... set size to max, quality to best, ISO to lowest number - then check.

Right, dropping the ISO to 64 has improved it, but its still there

There was an image setting which can be set between Sharp, Standard or Soft

Soft makes it looks like through the eyes of a pisshead, and it was on sharp...which didnt help!

Its currently on the highest setting which is 5m Fine at 2592x1944 pixels

The options are

5mp Fine & 5mp Normal - 2592 X 1944 Pixels
3:2 - 2736 X 1824
3mp - 2048 X 1536
2mp - 1600 X 1200
0.3mp - 640 X 480
RAW When converted 3648 X 2736 (28mb each)

Would it be recommended to actually drop the quality settings to reduce noise via a smaller photo?????

aaah

go 3mp, the 3:2 is a cropping routine for small frame cmos - withought looking I would imagine your sensor is a 4:3 insstead of a 3:2 (35mm ratio)

set to 3mp large fine standard and give it a go

up the ISO from 64 too - try it at 200 or 400 first

I got an S5600 just before xmas too and cant detect any of the issues you seem to be finding with yours. All on standard settings mine is.

Not much help I know, but might be worth getting it looked at?

Im going to try the new settings first then see if the issue is resolved

I assume you are taking photos in full manual mode? Fuji's cameras can adjust things behind the scenes to be 'helpful' in some of the auto modes.

Sharp settings induce jpeg artefacts (jaggies and speckles around edges). Soft stops the camera from putting any processing on, removing the problem, but then you need to sharpen the photos in your editing software on your PC (it can do a much better job than the camera does).

5MP Fine - ISO64

5MP Fine - ISO200

5MP Fine - ISO400

5MP Fine - ISO800 yikes

Ive left the darkness on the last shot to shot how bad the noise is on higher ISO settings!

If you can zoom into the drivers cluster, you'll see the noise around the edges

Why does the Exif info of those pictures show....

5MP Fine - ISO64 (Shows correct ISO)

5MP Fine - ISO200 (Shows ISO 400)

5MP Fine - ISO400 (Shows ISO 800)

5MP Fine - ISO800 (Shows ISO 800)

Sure there's a simple answer...?

Ive probably cocked up...been a bit off it today!

Anyway, the suggestions on here have actually helped...I'll use this camera as a stop gap until something better can be had hehe

How do you find the exif data?

something isnt right there

your iso 64 image is much brighter than your iso800 image, you said you used manual so did you alter your shutter speed for each or just the iso?

The exposures are different to every picture.

Oh and I look at the Exif data with this handy plug in... http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozill

Yes I did

Obviously, with the settings as I had them, once the ISO was increased a notch I changed the shutter speed and exposure to compensate

Ive probably made a complete cock of it all...Im not entirely with it at the moment and Im stone cold sober :scratcchin:
