Anglesey prepares for 2007

'Development work is on schedule'

Redevelopment work on the charming Anglesey circuit is on schedule as the track's organisers prepare for its biggest season of car racing to date.

The work's due to finish by late May, Anglesey will host seven race meetings in 2007, the most in one season since the track opened in 1996.

2007 schedule

• 26 - 27 May: BRSCC
• 2 - 3 June: Classic Sports Car Club
• 30 June - 1 July: BARC
• 14 - 15 July: BRSCC
• 8 - 9 September: Leinster MC
• 13 - 14 October: Lancs and Cheshire CC
• 2 December: Anglesey Circuit Club

In addition to the seven race meetings running over 15 days, the complex will be busy with motorbike events, track days, testing and sprints. Circuit boss Richard Peacock said he remained committed to grass roots motorsport and the track will host four sprints in 2007.

The redevelopment of the complex, which offers a total of four circuit variations, will also mean that two events can share the venue on the same day. "That helps the smaller clubs organise events," said Peacock.

One example of dual usage is over the weekend of 2 - 3 June, when two very different classic events will share the venue. On Saturday, the Three Castles Welsh Classic Trial will use the club circuit, while the Classic Sports Car Club will run a race meeting on the national circuit. On Sunday, the racing will switch to the international circuit. "We can offer clubs two different tracks during a weekend, so that drivers get to race on two track layouts during one trip," said Peacock.

The provisional number of starters has been confirmed by the MSA and up to 38 cars will race on the 2.1-mile international circuit. The 1.55-mile coastal circuit can have 32 starters, with 28 on the 1.2-mile national circuit and 20 cars on the 0.8-mile club circuit. These numbers are reduced for single-seaters over 2000cc.

As for construction work, "it's very much on schedule," said Peacock. The pit-wall is currently being built and sector one of the track is finished apart from the final wearing course. Sector two should be at the same stage by the end of February.

The new development will only be the start, this circuit will be huge in year to come, and when I say huge I don't mean the size of the Track I mean the circuit. Anglesey reminds me very much of the American tracks like Laguna Seca. I will not be surprised if hotels and business soon pop up around the track itself.

I'm doing a track day there on Friday 15th June. The old circuit was great fun; hopefully the new layout(s) will be even better.

Its great news for Anglesey. I grew up around there and it makes a great weekend destination with great roads nearby and you get surf on the beaches right by the circuit.

but then on the 19th May, theres also a round at Loton Park... i wonder if that is correct? 2 rounds on the same day... 2 locations.

Paul, I agree wholeheartedly, and I will go asfar as to say, it will be the best circuit in the UK!! My whole life has revolved around the Island, from my beginnings in a carry cot, to my family having had a property there, two caravans, and spending countless weekends and months there whilst growing up( sorry, still not grown up yet!!), and over the last few years as an Anglesey Circuit instructor. This is part of the reason they were given a grant for the development, and I hope, and agree that hotels, and businesses on the Island will pick up. Over the past 10 years, business has been in decline, many hotels have closed, and I can think of at least 6 that have been demolished, and are now blocks of flats. Anglesey has never been "trendy", unlike Abersoch, but has far more to offer in the way of beaches, facilities, geolgical interest, sailing, water ski-ing, fishing, surfing, wind surfing, and now the best motorsport facility in the whole of Great Britain.

In the eighties, I raced in Mini Miglias, and made many friends from the south east, some had never heard of Anglesey, but when I invited them to stay at my caravan,they fell in love with the place, one couple loved it that much, bought one on their second visit, and the more time they spent there, the more they loved it!!!

Basically, to sum up, I can't wait for May and June, I am working on at least four track days over four weeeks, each one on a different permutation!!

Need to start looking for a property there now!!! Howard

Yep, that's correct. There are so many rounds now (23) that's it's a struggle fitting them all in! We've had rounds on the same day before, but usually ones at opposite ends of the country.

Looks like radar has been bulldozed from the aerial photoo, it would be a shame if they did not include it in one of the four new tracks.

Think it's gone, it's not part of the new track anyway.


Heard them talking at the Autosport show, 2007 calendar is fixed but they plan to attract Superbikes and possibly F3/BTCC type events in the future.

I know you're joking (or perhaps not?) but in all seriousness it is a problem. I went to a few races there in Alfa championship and Auto Italia and they weren't well supported. When both championships were together and were double headers, the chance of 4 races in a weekend for the Alfa drivers seemed to do the trick to entice them to the island, and those that made the effort loved it. Now with the chance of races on different circuit layouts in a weekend, it should be even better.

The other problem is regarding development. As any development there is likely to bring in English speakers, and therefore dilute the Welsh language, there could be a problem. It will be important to get the natives on board (that will be me included when I return to live in Anglesey later this year after being away a couple of years). Neighbouring Gwynedd council on the mainland have introduced a Welsh language impact assessment as part of the planning process for any development, and I suspect that it is only a matter of time before the same thing happens on Anglesey.

I don't know if you noticed the aeriel photo's were taken by Kevin Hughes. Top Bloke - didn't get enough thrills on the track racing bikes, so built himself a girocopter!

My girlfriend and I loved the old circuit. We are booked to do Saturday 16 (Coastal) and Sunday 17 June (GP) with Book a Track.

That just means you have to drive on the A5 to get there, which is a fantastic road...
