Bringing you up todate,
Bought the car in september and soon noticed the speedo was reading incorectly.
Booked it in with a main dealer who replaced the sender unit.
Same problem so i assumed faulty speedo.
Sent speedo off for calibration.
Refitted it and test drove problem is now greater than before.
Also needle now rests at 20mph did'nt before it was sent away.
Booked the car back in with the main dealer who fitted the sender unit who says he has gapped it right and can find no fault with his work.
He says he will replace the sender unit in a couple of days when in stock so that part can be dismissed as the problem.
At no charge to me.
He says in his opinion it is the speedo head or the tacho interface.
I am still awaiting a call from the speedo repairers.
I am talking wildly out 70ish-120 30ish-60
Any thought anyone as this is doing my head in.
Cheers.

sorry mate, no idea; my knowledge extends to bent 'pins' on sender causing under-reading, a broken odometer (sorted c/o speedycables) and wrong sized rear tyres.

I'm sure somebody will be along shortly .......

Must adnit it seems like the speedo head to me,parking at 20mph indicates problems with the unit anyway.

I got a reply from the speedo repairers and it seems that all they did was repair the broken odometer and checked it for speed there mistake was not to communicate with me.
The director was most apolagetic and is hopefully sending me a spare speedo so i can check that one against mine.
There might be light at the end.
Looks like ive got to lie on my back legs in the air again!!

Who did the Odometer repair ? Mines stuck at 40,500 and no amount of banging or tapping will make it go again !

If I were you I would send the speedo back to the repair company as if it reads 20 as a minimum then the mechanism is faulty.
I had my speedo pack up last year about three weeks after buying her. It turned out to be the
sensor, I replaced it and everything has been fine since.
However during the fault finding, I found a small plastic box behind the dash which was part of the speedo circuit. This had a circuit board inside that appeared to divide down the pulses from the speed sensor and/or produced a voltage dependent on on the pulse frequency I cannot remember which. I did make a note of the components to work out what this box was there for but I've lost it.
This may be part of the signal to the ECU for idle adjustment but as I fixed the fault with a new sensor I never got round to understanding what the box did
But if this box was faulty on your car could this produce a massively inaccurate speedo?????
Just a thought.
Cheers
Paul.

Speedo repairers are sending out another speedo set at the same milage tommorow and i will put that in the car at the weekend.
The clock can then get eliminated from the problem.
Can't help feeling that the problem is the tacho inverter(i think thats what it was called)It's the part that sends the signal from the transducer to the clock.
This might be the part that your refering to.
I will know at the weekend and i'll keep you posted.
GIVE ME A CABLE DRIVEN ONE ANY DAY!
Regards

Now sorted the speedo problem (ish)
It was the clock after all.
Put the replacement in this morning again and test drove it also reads 0mph at idle.
Thought the speedo was a bit out as i was following traffic so came home and asked the wife to be a speed monitor.
She has a 3 year old bmw so that should be accurate.
This is what i came up with.
BMW v TVR
30-35mph
40-45mph
80-88mph
90-100mph
25 mile test.
She would'nt go any faster!!
So would that be the gapping because the garage who fitted the transducer would'nt have been able to roadtest as the clock was wildley out.

Where did i put my keys?

most analogue units over registar slightly for legal reasons, and you will find the Bmw is more state of the art so far more accurate, your chim does not seem to far out in my opinion,8 to 10 % out seems the norm with dial speedo,s.
