OK guys? .....mate of mine from work has just bought a tuning thingy from fleabay. It promises an increase of 20-40bhp on his 2.0t S60. It plugs into the airflow meter plug, which stays disconnected. Its a small box with two wires coming out of it which you push into this plug. What is it ? Is it just a plain old resistor making the ECu think something else.
Just my mind thinking if thats all it is then I will make one for far less...........

i believe they are resistor things which make the car over fuel. Ive heard all sorts of problems that these can cause...

I believe real mods for a real engine but if it makes a difference let me know and ill buy one!!!

probably just a fixed value resistor, tends to fool the airflow meter into providing more fuel via the injectors, cant say for certain if they work or just make the mixture over rich and as a result will almost certainly increase mpg during normal driving.

Cant say for certain how it would effect the CAT, if your mate wants to go down this route, it may be a good idea to pop down and see a friendly mechanic and get the exhaust gas analalysed before and after fitting.

The catalyst will burn very hot to get rid of the CO, and won't last long. Then the next MOT will fail because the cat has failed.

One possible way around some of the negative issues, why not fit an 'interrupter' switch in series with one of the contacts, that way you could turn it off or on as required

Surely if it's a modern car it can probably have a remapped ECU chip fitted and do the job properly?
