Lairy handling?
Discussion
'Lo all
I'm considering either a 964 C2 or a 993 C2 as a more practical alternative to an Elise for a while.
I have a big question, though: is their handling as lairy as the reputation suggests, or was it fairly well sorted by the 964s? Are the 993s appreciably better?
Thanks

Tough question to answer as it's a bit subjective. I think the 993 has almost flawless handling provided you're a litlle bit sensible. I never had a scare in mine, and drove them like a mad eejit. But having told everyone I knew how they were pussycats, a friend bought one and put himself and his GF in the hospital in one. You can't be a muppet behind the wheel, but if you are any way sensitive to what a car is doing, and are in any way even reasonably comptent behind the wheel, and don't mind adapting your driving style a little, then I think both the 964 and the 993 are fabulous; and whilst not vice-free, are certainly not scary monsters. You'll have to respect a 964 a tiny bit more than a 993 IMO. The latter car allows a few more liberties to be taken.
They are as planted as a fast car can get! The reason why so many people get into trouble is that they can go so fast so easily, and the car will give you a false sense of security so you think you can handle the speed. But then you can't fight physics!
The 964 is pretty much as good as a 993 on normal road speed both in terms of speed and handling, 993 may be a bit more forgiving on limit.

drive any 911 like a loon and you will come off the road
remember to brake in a straight line, carry sensible cornering speed and nail it out of the bends and you will be fine
golden rule: don't lift off if you are committed in a bend, you will say something like 'oh dear' when you come to rest hopefully right side up

911 handling is just fine - secure and hugely rewarding. Only a complete idiot will encounter problems.
Some tuition, on track ,is worthwhile to understand the physics and get the best out of a 911.
You would be right to consider a C2, and the 993's rear suspension is more advanced than the 964's.
Other option, if moving from an Elise, might be a Boxster 'S'
