2 problems have crept up with the car, one, the water temperature needle seems to get stuck on max, quite worrying but i know it isnt overheating, i was told this was a problem that was rectified pre delivery but its still happening, gave the dash a whack and it reset but after awhile it went back (obviously the needle not the sensor then),
is this easily accessible? or am i going to have a rattly dash if they try to fix it?

2nd is the steering, when stationary it occasionaly makes a metal on metal groan that comes and goes, you can also hear some sort of metallic noise at low speed, at higher speeds its fine, will take it back to cridfords but dont want to be separated from the car so soon

CM, if I were you i would go into one (slightly) with Cridfords.
As I recall you saw this car privately, you could have bought it for less,so the money you paid the dealer should be for a sorted car with some sort of warranty.
This is unless you implicitly bought it sold as seen?
At least let them know of the problems and arrange a mutually convenient time a little way in the future, just in case you find something else you are not happy with.
You may as well get your money's worth?

Agree.

Plus, since I've seen a v nice 968 for sale privately but which also had that groan from the PAS, I'd be keen to understand what it might be. Or I could just walk away...

Groaning from power steering pumps under load is fairly normal in most cars, but they are prone to failure in 944s and 968s - the one in my 944S2 cab went after sounding worse and worse as the months went by. Could be that a new PAS pump is needed.

Could just be air in the PAS system causing the groaning. Might be worth checking the fluid level.

will be popping down this weekend to see them, youre completely right CS, i paid that money for piece of mind and ill make sure they know it

i dont think the steering groan is the pump, its more a metallic sound and is coming from quite far up the steering column, almost from where the steering wheel connection, it also goes if i turn it left and right, obviously something is misaligned or needs lubrication

cheers

If it is the groan that 944's and 968's are known for at full lock, slow speed (both mine do it), then many owners have reported an improvement simply by replacing the fluid.

I must get round to doing mine

On the knock front , is there a Universal joint between steering column & rack???
I had this knock on lock thing from my old Clubsport,a harmless looking UJ had a bit of play in it,I changed that at a ludicrous £120 for the part alone and all was well....maybe a 968 is completely different as a CS doesn't have power steering.

Didn't you have PS on your CS ?

Thom the Cs is based on the 3.2 Carrera, none of them are fitted with PS.
Of the 964 RS,Power steering was only fitted to rhd and not lhd models,it is only when you get to the 993 with it's much larger tyres that power steering was need on Clubsport models.

I think Thom thought you were talking about a 968CS as it is a 968 kinda thread.

The 968CS DOES come with PAS, presumably as the engine is over the wheels and weighs a couple of Dazrens or four Scottsters, depending on your choice of units

My mistake I was talking about a real Clubsport, where the name for the 968 with little trim came from.

Ouch. So if it wasn't built in '73 it isn't a real RS ?
