Another thread has prompted this.

I was approached by a C4S driver the other day. Unfortunately he was a complete dick, with a real chip on his shoulder. The conversation went like this.

"I can't see why anyone would buy a Lamborghini. My 911 is every bit as good, and a good deal cheaper".

"Fair enough.", I said. "So if I'd bought two Carrera 4's instead, would that make us even, or would I actually be ahead on points?".

He just looked at me with an open mouth and then walked back to his car.

This raises an interesting point. The 'my car is better than your car' debate, and the people who use it.
Why do these sort of drivers take credit for the dynamic qualities of a car they didn't have a hand in designing, and then use it as some sort of stick to try and beat you with?
If a 'pissing contest' is all these people are interested in, why doesn't it ever occur to them that if you'd wanted whatever it is they drive, you'd have bought one, thus robbing them of whatever it is that's making them feel inferior in the first place?

Discuss!

You've just heard a loser's comment.

No need to show my prcensoredck in order to be sure it's the biggest in town, which 'aint be, anyway... As long as you don't care and feel confident of who you are and have in hands (sometimes in both hands nono )

I would rather smile and let the punter walk away, not even wasting any saliva in a reply.

Down to a feeling of inadequacy I suspect. I can't afford something like an LP640, but that doesn't make me think my Corvette is in the same playing field, or try to convince others that it is. I plan to buy a Countach or Diablo this year (sat in a Countach for the first time on Sunday - something special even when parked - like a kid I was). A friend has an '04 Corvette Z06 which he let me drive. Sensational performance with a tested and proven 0-60 time of 3.9 secs and one of the best drives I've ever had. He thought maybe that would make me rethink wanting a Countach - it didn't, and I knew it wouldn't. Basically, if it was just about speed, wouldn't we all want something like an Atom ? I explained it's the whole experience I'm after. Yes, I want performance, but that's a given with a Lamborghini. What I want is the look, the feel, and the feeling it will give me to own something so beautiful and special. Not about status, not about Lambo vs. Ferrari or Porsche, but about having what I want and sod what others think. And no, I'll never tell a Porsche driver I think a Lambo is a better car, I'll just admire his car as being what he wants - unless he's a pcensoredk of course - then I might laugh

I will quite happily share my humble opinion with anyone that the 911 is the best all round sports car the world has ever seen ... but it pales against the sheer feeling of plain simple schoolboy excitement that you get every time you get behind the wheel of a Ferrari.

I think I will always prefer the Ferrari to a Lamborghini for purely subjective reasons ... but I hope to God that one day I can own a Lamborghini to find out for sure

Some people don't realise that insulting someone's car is tantamount to insulting their wife ... possibly even worse hehe

I imagine there are several modern day cars out there that are way better than my own. Heck, on everyday roads and in everyday traffic, a Vauxhall Corsa will likely keep up with even the fastest supercar, which begs the question why does anyone ever bother buying a supercar?

For me it has absolutely nothing to do with the performance because, if I'm truthful, my driving abilities won't let me extract more than half of what my car is actually capable of. So why did I buy it? It's about the total package, being able to drive an iconic car and being able to drive something a bit different. It's about standing out from the crowd and making a statement. I'm not sure what statement I am making yet, perhaps that could be the subject of another discussion. laugh

But if Mr Porsche owner would like to come up to me and express his inadequacies by attacking my choice of car I don't have a problem with that, because I am more than happy with what I drive and would never feel the urge to be drawn in to a 'pissing contest' (which I think is a male specific affliction anyway). yes

The guy clearly is a knob. I have been a committed Pork driver for several years, currently got a 997 GT3, but the next big upgrade will be a Gallardo. Absolutely love the things.

Yum and, indeed, dribble.

There are times when I feel I should be wearing a Tee shirt that says "I have driven EVERYTHING, but I happen to have BOUGHT this... because it's fab".

Or perhaps...

"My mother's FIAT Tipo 1.4 is a fantastic drive. Everything else is just degrees of MORE fantastic."

Then I'd look an even bigger plonker!

What, that C4S driver was an idiot, or that Gallardos are better than 911s?

Mike, you clearly won that pissing contest in Mr C4S's eyes otherwise he wouldn't have felt the need to somment, so just walk away.

Can never understand this, if he's happy, great. Why try and tell you you're wrong.

Totaly depends on usage andyway, if I were doing 25,000 miles a year on business I wouldn't want to use the Gallardo, I'd want something like a Merc S Class.

Happily I don't!!

The daft thing is, if he hadn't opened with such a stupid line he'd have discovered I shared his view about 911s. As it turned out, he'll never know that our cars gave us something in common NOT something to seperate us. That's what made him a dick.
(Am I going all 'Ghandi' on this one? laugh)

I love these guys. I get the same kind of nonsense with the Cerberas, slightly different: "I can't see why anyone would buy a TVR. My 911 is far superior and faster."

After making this video of a tussle with a 650bhp 3.8 996TT for a bit of fun, I got some amazing backchat from the Porsche lot which inspired this video as my response. Porsches? I shit 'em.

Nicely done, Phil. And not at all controversial!
Might I suggest a change in title to "from a passing CANOE" laugh
To be fair, they were probably terrified that your wipers where going to fly off and cause an accident!
I'd have found it very distracting and would have let you past on that basis. driving

Again though, surely if any one who dropped the cash to buy a 911 wanted a TVR they would have just bought one (and vice versa).

Phil,

Some quality vids there mate, never ceases to amaze me how a very good driver in a quick car can just blitz an average driver in a very fast car. Keep up the good work.

Ah. But, Andy, do you notice how they give him a wide berth so that his oars don't catch on their door handles?!
And it must be very sweaty in the Cerbera. What with all the frenzied rowing that must be going on inside! laugh

No trouble passing.... hehe

Actually I have a healthy respect for 911s (and like some of the more extreme versions). I hitched a ride in the Turbo a couple of weeks later and it's an awesome car.

Afternoon Mike,

I think in one word jealousy!! I had 911's of every variant for 10 years and they are great cars. But there is no way it even comes close to the rareity or experience off owning a lambo. At times like that its sometimes better just to smile to yourself and walk away (i've never done it mind you).

Andy.
