Hello all,

I'm currently on the look out for a Boxter S around the year 2000/2001.

I was wondering if anyone with any experience in Boxters can give me a bit of advice on common problems/things to look out for when buying etc etc.

Thanks in advance...

To look for:
- MANUAL gearbox
- Get full leather interior else the car looks cheap inside
- Heated seats and deflector increase scope for open top motoring massively
- Check whether standard or sports seats work better for you. For me it was definitively the sports one
- Don't bother for PCM - any Becker Radio-Satnav or TomTom is way better

Common problems:
- The plastic rear window can get damaged when opening the roof at low temperatures. It's expensive to replace

Boxters have a tendancy to eat wheel bearings and exhaust heat shields.. well all mine did (x3) and I didn`t track them .. although they were driven with some enthusiasm .. but well within the laws of the highway m`lud honest.... ahem ...

Otherwise - the only tips are: to avoid lary colours schemes and bright interiors for resle. Silver was the most produced colour and seems to resell the quickest. I drove my Boxster S in and someone else drove it out 2 hours later while I was having a coffee and admiring my new 997!

Some of the cars were made in Finland, others in Germany the chassis number will give this away; but build quality is identical in my experience.

Great cars - have fond memories. Just don`t drive a 997 .... you`ll want one ... then a Turbo ..or a GT3 ... it doesn`t stop !!

Great cars

Heated seats very nice to have.
I wouldn't say avoid it, but traction control is not really needed.
Carefull with big wheels combined with sports suspension - ride will be compromised.
Sport Design wheels a pain to keep clean.
Another common fault is faulty door membranes. Check that the carpet at the bottom of the doors is nice & dry.

Drop links seem to wear too, but they're not really a dear job.

I think they're superb cars - highly recommended.

My next car may well be a 3.2S I can't really think of anything else to replace it with; unless I can scrape enough together for a 996 but even then I'd miss the convertible thing (don't really care for 911 drop tops).

Happy hunting.

Bob.

As long as you are buying the 'S' it will have all the essential extras you need such as 17inch wheels, air con and leather seats, anything else is a bonus, I would recomend this one http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/130718 , but then again i would coz its mine

Agreed, I have 18' sport classic wheels on my S with sports suspension- you'd be surprised how much it scrapes in multi storeys and on larger speedbumps- tramlines a fair bit too. Quite hard on most of London's poorly surfaced roads but great on track and for me makes it look nicer too.
I don't have traction- no problems so far.
