WAX OIL THE CHASSIS
Discussion
I have a 1998 chimaera and had it wax oiled today by the looks of things this is the first treatment, obviously some corrosion any comments welcome, also I need a near side front top suspension ball joint. Work in Bristol, live in Chepstow any help would be appreciated, as being a female need to avoid bad advice !
Sounds like you were quite lucky if it's never been wax-oiled before, a 9 year old chassis untreated could eaily turn out to be a piece of rust.
Chassis should be checked annually and wax-oiled at least every 2 years depending on how its done. If it's a quick rub down and spray (around £100 at most garages) then do it annually. I had mine done at Austec in Oct 2005 which cost £350 but they fully stripped, primed and oiled the whole chassis which is something I'll be having done every 2 years though still checked annually just in case.

Sorry totally disagree, if a chassis is looked after i dont see why it needs waxoiling
it hides the rust

I think it depends on how the car is to be used. If you want the chassis to be in concours condition so that people can admire it and you only use the car for low mileage in good weather then Waxoyl may not be the best route, provided you are prepared and have the facility to clean/inspect regularly.
I've done about 14K miles in mine in 19 months of ownership and don't go out on salted roads and preferably not wet ones, but if it happens to rain when I'm out so be it.
I removed the rust on mine, wasn't bad being a 2000 car, Hammerite was followed by lots of Waxoyl. The wishbones don't look pretty being now covered in dirty Waxoyl, but I do belive the thing is protected on a car that is used all throughout the year.
i'm not saying that Seasider is wrong, but that's my opinion.

Awkward sod!
I see what your saying but the fact mine is an everyday car and goes out in all sorts of crud I prefer the added protection from the waxoil.

dont feed the troll!! HTH
I live in Lydney (Am in chepstow regularly and havn't seen your car yet) My last service was done at David Hendry in Malmesbury and had a chassis check and wax oil done for about £60.00. Now that County in Cheltenham no longer service TVRs its a long journey to nearest decent dealer. Will probably do a lot more myself. Put up a thread if you need a hand with anything (easy stuff that is, im pretty good with electrics)

I particularly agree with all 3 quotes..... but just so I don't get accused of fence sitting - in precedence from bottom upwards.

Oi... I said I agreed with you... Now your casting aspersions about obesity?
Tis a fact that we here have nice lithesome posteriors, not the fat rounded variety to be found on certain other forums

Twas a little unfair of the chaps Del ~ I am not a great waxoyl fan
I need to do some waxoiling myself soon..
I know about putting the Waxoyl in a bucket of hot water to make it flow etc., but can an expert tell me how messy it is? I'll be using a 2-post car lift, but I'd rather not get the floor covered in wax/oil. Is it as messy a process as it sounds? Can I cover the place in newspaper?
I've managed to keep the floor clean while painting Rust Bullet on, but I just can't get above the outriggers so need to put Waxoil in there.

It gets *everywhere*. On the floor, on you, on your clothes. Everywhere. And if it doesn't get everywhere, you're not using enough of it ...
At least it gives you nice soft hands.
Waxoyl for the price is good stuff. It does as it says on the can, and will stop rust when applied directly to it, but does not work over flaky paint, as it creates a lovely moisture trap between the paint and metal, and the the wax simply seals the moisture in and it carrys on rusting. I pumped 15 gallons into a 1978 lancia over 5 years and its still rusted away due to all the rust pockets and poor underseal you could not get the wax into. Impossble to stop this era of Lancia rusting away anyway. You can put it into a very low temperature oven or hot water to thin it,(loosen the lid first!) but it rapidly thickens as you add it to the spray gun, and as it hits the cold chassis, so it does not flow that well. Personally I thin it down to the consistency of milk with white spirit and spray it with a parafin spary gun at 50 psi plus into all the crevices, so with capilery action will soak it in as far as possible, and hopefully drive out any moisture. Then add a second unthinned coat over the more exposed areas ( I use a grit blasting gun that works well). Spraying it really thickly is not a good idea, as when it dries it contracts, and small gaps form in the coating. I do agree its mucky old stuff however !
I'm NOT a troll, I just appreciate that others might have opinions that whilst different from mine, are perfectly valid, given that their situation may differ from mine.
Anyway, to answer the point about applying Waxoyl, lovely stuff:
Put the container in the airing cupboard overnight. Also do the same with the spraying equipment(if previously used) if she'll let you best put it in a tied up black sack to contain any smell.
The bucket of hot water is still good but best not use one that you'll use afterwards for washing cars. Waxoyl is not good on screens. Get one of those 99p ones from B&Q.
Lay a sheet of plastic over the floor, less than £2 from diy shop and chuck it out afterwards.
When wax stops spraying readily, stop for a cuppa whilst it heats up again. You'll be popular with the missus when you send her for another bucket of hot water. " I hope you're going to clean all this wax out of my bucket when you've finished playing with that car of yours"
