Ipod in Porsche Boxster Question
Discussion
Various options available depending upon how much you want to spend and the age of the car.
As mine is a relatively old Boxster with little options by the original owner I decided to bite the bullet and go for a relatively expensive option. This was changing the head unit to a Becker Cascade unit and ipod interface. The head unit then also gives me sat nav and bluetooth connection to my phone. Relatively expensive at just under £800 for the head unit and £80 for the ipod connector plus fitting. the ipod then lives in the little cubby hole below the head unit and is charged as you go. All ipod control is done through the head unit.
All this was done by a fellow Ph'er, Chris at Prestige Audio. The install sounds great, looks factory and is so easy to use. I've promised I'll take some pictures and get them up so check back during the weekend and you can see what you think. Me I'm really happy with the change, it's just fantastic.

Honestly don't know re 987 as I'm running an older 986 and I know Porsche changed the audio wiring at some stage from traditional to an optical MOST bus system and this is more complex and means options. Best thing is to give Chris a call at Prestige on 01923 711113 as he will know much better than me.

Cheers CVP for the kind words!
987s need a Gateway 500 (unless you wanna rip it all out and fit a proper system!!).
Circa £400 supplied and fitted!

OK, I did promise Chris I'd get some piccies up on PH for those of us with older Boxsters or 996's and unhappy with the factory set up/ wanting to add sat nav but still retain the overall factory look. Apologies for the basic images, just taken on a little Point and shoot this morning.
Here are a few shots from my car after the install;
Overall view of the set up in radio mode. You can see the ipod sitting in the cubby hole at the base of the CD holder (note I do not have a CD changer in the front boot)
In media mode, a quick shot to show how the ipod menus come through on the screen. To scroll through the menus simply use the rotary switch on the right and click it in to activate. All the ipod menus come through on the screen exactly as if you are using the ipod standalone.
The look when in media mode with tracks playing. To skip to next track simply click the rotary switch on the right round one notch
The view in Nav mode. I turned on the main electrcis so that you can see the colour match between the temp controls and the head unit. If you want a different colour the Cascade has a lot of options. Whilst the display is quite small it's still big enough and all instructions are announced as well.
Finally the micrphone for the hands free phone. I'll replace this piccy as it does nto show the install too well. As you will see it's a very discrete fitting and you really have to look hard to find it, most folk miss it entirely.
Cheers
