I planned on treating my own chassis. It needs wire brushing and painting at the front of the outriggers, but it's really tight on getting my jack/ramps underneath. It's way lower than my old 400 wedge!

So instead i thought to hell with it, i'll pay for a garage to do it.

I'm in Herts Stevenage, so Barnet is close and i suppose Tower view.
Anyone recommend where's best?smash

You are the best person to do it.

Garages don't love your car the way you do. They tend to give jobs like this to the trainee and you end up with all the visible parts done and none of the vulnerable parts like the outrigger tops.

I had mine done by Techniques in Stotfold - Morgan dealer, but they service a number of TVR's too.

Price was reasonable considering the amount of work they did. Their number is 01462 835500.

Offord are quite close to you, too, but I'm inclined to agree with tvrbob. A garage won't do anything like as good a job as you will. Mine took me about 3 or 4 days in total (spread over a number of weekends), pressure washing the underside and wheel wells, allowing it to dry, scraping off all the loose powder coat, wire brushing any crumbly bits, painting any bare bits with POR15, undersealing any bits exposed to road debris, stones, etc., then Waxoyling everything. Now I'm tresting the roof with Thompsons and that's taken days, too, since it needs 3 or 4 coats and I'm doing it outside 'cos it don't half pong.

I agree, having re-furbished 2 previous chassis myself. I would prefer to do it, but only if i can get the car up high enough.
Will the car go up on ramps without touching the bodywork?

If you use additional planks etc to shallow the angle of the ramp it will.

I've got to agree with the do it yourself sentiments. I agree, no one else takes as much care to do the job properly as you do on your own car. You will also discover properly what sort of condition your outriggers are in.

need to do mine too. any tips for the tops of the outrigger tubes as the floorpan wraps so tightly around I'm thinking it's next to impossible to get anything up and in there, other than a tube from a can of waxoyl or similar to give it a drenching....

It is possible to fill some of the tubes with Waxoyl as well as spray coating. Dan Melladay in Lincolnshire has the gear to do this.

I used to do this with my old classic car chassis. Acquire a long stiff thin tube with a 360deg tiny nozzle on the end, found mine among some waxoil equipment at my local motormart. Drill a small hole in the side at one end that is sized to hold a seal grommet. Stick the tube in all the way to the far end then spray as you withdraw it. Stick the grommet in, job done.

Blimey...by the time everyones finished their cars are going to end up weighing a lot more than the 1 ton they do already...you could always cut the old outrigger tubes off and weld in solid bar...that would solve the problem....hehe

A ton? You'll be lucky! Mine weighs 1200kg. The fibreglass is over an inch thick in places.

I don't fill the chassis; I simply spray a layer on the insides. That said I haven't done this with my TVR chassis because they are sealed. The classic car chassis I used to work on had open ends and breather holes and were made of thinner stuff.

1200kg yikes i weighed mine on our calibrated weigh bridge, nearly a full tank of fuel, and about 15kgs of crap in the boot, 1080kgs. Mind you i weigh over 130kgs so not that different when im in the car. laugh

However when I had mine done the lad who did it told me he had drilled into outriggers before to be met by a nice flow of water yikes

The plate in the engine compartment says 1200kg on mine, and when I had it corner weighted a couple of years ago, that's what it weighed. Pity the same accuiracy doesn't extend to power output!

I know the problem!
