Leaking Swirl Pot

Bugger again !
just noticed a drop of water at the base of the swirl pot. As its freshly painted I could see a slight blister in the paint about half way up the pot, poked it with a screwdriver (well you have to dont you?) and now have a 3mm hole. I see that the Gamekeeper - Steve Reid used to sell new pots a year or two ago. Dont know if he still does, but I was hoping I could do a repair for this summer and think about replacement in next winters budget... Can anyone recommend a fixit product. I dont really want a pour into the tank type product, I would rather use a patch or sealing washer under a screw or some form of plastic-metal for now. I could braze a patch on I guess...

Thats bad news.
The rubber and hose clip approach would be my first step. I'd clean back to bare metal first to see how extensive the damage is and how a big a patch you'll need, There's sure to be a weak area around that hole. Don't do the clips up too tight, the tube is fairly thin.

Had a look inside the pot and it is well corroded, but punched hole slightly larger, turning the burr over a bit so a screw would get a purchase, put a screw with a rubber washer in and tightened until washer seals the hole, seems to be good for now, but I guess a new swirl pot will be the answer in the longer term...

Cheers Steve. I'm going to see if my plug repair will hold for this summer and replace in next winters refurb...(yes it looks like I will be doing one every year from what I have seen and read on this forum
) I'm trying to keep to as low a budget as possible for this year, but will buy if I need to. thanks again, I've logged the offer

Sometimes the lowest budget is not wrecking the engine with water loss. Even worse is breaking down on your way somewhere important with your wife/girlfriend. The cost implications are immeasureable and last for ever. Your temporary fix looks good but i'm sure it is more temporary than you think. 15psi. I am not trying to sell you a swirl pot, I'm not much bothered whether you buy one from me or not, but buy one you will. Good luck and I hope it lasts the summer. The joys of old cars !!! sTeVeR

If your dead against a new one at the moment take it off and let me have it for a couple of days and I will have a patch welded on for you - I have been meaning for ages to take some parts of my own to a guy that manufactures all my bracket work for my business so it will make me make the effort to go see him with my stuff as well as yours and best of all he does all my bits and bobs for a favour - let me know mate.

Thanks for the advice Steve, I'm sure you are right that I will need a new one at some stage and I appreciate what you say about the cheapest not being the best. I have seen inside and it doesnt look pretty, so I guess even if this plug holds, and I'm sure it will - the plug has a hex head and was tightened using a socket and felt firm, the pot will no doubt spring further leaks in the future.

As Rockey said above Clanceboddiger is making a small batch and Ken and I have been discussing already his timescale and mine (back on the road for May) so I'll stick with that plan for now and if things change I'll make other arrangements.
Thanks to you all... its nice to talk as they say, it can feel pretty lonely in the barn when things dont go as planned, this is a great site.
