Predictable here mate;

ZX-6R (my fave for spacious sportiness)

Thundercat - strong engine with a more torquey character than the latest 600s.The same motor was used in the 98-2004 Fazer600s - also a good bike. Both bikes have R1 brakes (so very good)

CBR600F - it's a Honda so you can always resell it

Maybe even a 2001 GSXR600K1 if you can stretch a little. They are quite spacious for a 600 supersports.

When you get some free time we can go and sit on a few.

You got your license at the perfect time. Ready for spring.

Learn on? You mean like a 125? Or are you going to do Direct Access and you want a "first big bike" (can anyone else hear Fisher Price there?) that fits you and is easy to ride and fun?

If the latter then something like a Fazer 600 is a great first proper bike, does everything you could want, commuting or touring or scratching or just pootling.

What about a Kawasaki Z750/s. Big and comfy,100bhp, etc etc. Would suit the larger
gentleman. I imagine the Insurance wouldn't be that high.

Depends on what you're doing with it, I'm guessing you're not commuting on it so to an extent get whatever takes your fancy. As well meaning as they are, noone can give you advice. Well, except for "Get what you want".

Given our similar stature and tastes though, I'd say a Fazer 600 is pretty good, so would things like the Hornet 600, Z750, ER6 etc. I'd have a good look at the CBF1000 too though; had I bought one I would probably be happy to skelp around on it for a few years: as it is, the Fazer stands a good chance of vanishing come the autumn in favour of a bigger bike & a small commuter.

For different stuff, BMW F800S/ST's are meant to be very good, and things like the R1100/1150/1200's are worth a look. Pan Euro? Guzzi?

Umm, but don't listen to me.

I am 6ft 2" and not small. over 15 stone. my 01 Fazer is fun, cheap to run, very quick ( even with me on it compared to my kit car) and cheap it you drop it a few times. I know

worth looking at. the bike is good, engine is good, gearbox etc..... you get the picture

Oggs

I had a Yamaha Thundercat as my first bike, also known as a YZR600. It's like a slightly softer touring version of an R6. Kind of.

I'm 6'2 and did about 13k on this in comfort - toured france comfortabley and hit 155 on it

I'd really recommend it as a first bike as they're good value, cheap to service and very reliable.

Good luck choosing!

The ST1100 is noted for being a bit cramped for those of long lower limb. The ST1300 addressed that to some extent with a height-adjustable seat but I still read of complaints from the over 6-foot-2's...

Also I suspect that anything with a litre-plus engine could be a crippler insurance-wise for a first ride... I'm really really old but with no recent riding history they still stung me 2.5 large plus half a K excess... and the Pan Euro's are hardly sports bikes.

Crikey

My 1000cc Ducati ST2 was £480 TPFT when I started riding and I'm slightly less old.
