From the "Newcastle Journal" this morning. They are installing additional cameras where there have been accidents recently and spending the revenue on "safety measures". Northumbria Police are quoted as saying that 70% of accidents are speed related. Is it worth me writing to the newspaper or am I wasting my time...

IMHO virtually 100% of accidents are speed related, it's very hard to have a car crash at 0mph. Lies, damned lies and statistics yet again

No, write. Every letter calling for accountability of the figures helps. Otherwise the great brainwashing continues... if they can get away with telling people things often enough, people will believe it.

These sort of statistics are designed to promote Numptyism...

I mean unless you are speeding, dunk or high on drugs there is no way you can have an accident, even if you are reading a good book at the wheel......

It could be that 70% of the accidents in the places they're installing extra cameras are caused by excessive speed (if the roads are really badly designed, and people are driving around very quickly with their eyes closed)...

Everytime I read one of these percentage things, the actual number differs. Anyone and everyone feels that they are qualified to survey the situation these days and then throw these (most likely) incorrect figures at the public.

All I know is 100% of accidents are caused by people who can't drive properly

Thats a bit of a wild statement isn't it? You are saying there is no room for human or mechanical error while driving. If I hit black ice at 5mph and hit a lamp post, it's my fault becasue I can't drive or an "accident" because there was nothing I could do to stop my car from sliding into the post?

Sigh.........to cut a long story short; Yes it's your fault because you did not anticipate the conditions fully and, as proven by your accident, even 5mph was too much.....sooorrrreeeeee. MoJo.

And if my ex-wife cuts my breaks and I hit the same lamp post is that my fault to for failing to check every part of my car

Geeze, and I suppose that car bomb planted by my terrorist enemies that caused my car to hit the same lamp post is my fault too

I still fail to believe that 100% of accidents are caused by drivers who can't drive. Human nature means we as humans make mistakes. Proven by the fact that the best drivers in the world still have accidents on and off the track. How many accidents in F1 happen because of mechcanial failure? Plenty. The point is they are caused by mechanical failure and not by the fact that the driver can't drive.

And what about those breeze blocks that fell off an oncoming lorry onto my stationary car?

Ouch.

As I said, all i know is . Every accident I have been a part of have been caused by the person driving not being in control of the car. I don't know about the rest of the world, but I can safely say that without human error there would not have been any accidents. 100% was a bold statement, but was only said to reaffirm what my post was originally about..made-up facts and figures

Actually, it is 89% of statistics that are made up on the spot.

Also, as 78% of accidents are caused by drunk drivers, 22% are caused by sober drivers ... so is it safer to be drunk ?!"£! Errr, definitively NO!

And another thing; I hate all people that make sweeping generalisations.
