Hi everyone, I´ve joined to see if I can get any advice on my 96 xjr 6cyl I´ve had for a year now. So much car for the money 3500k...Slowly having a few things repaired as the last owner has not had car maintained for about 20000ks judging by the service history hence price (I think)or are they just so low in price now? I am trying to trace the reason for an uneven ideling only when car is warm, it moves between 750 and about 500 rpm, does´nt stall though, then having to change to `N´ because its just unbearable at lights to see the person in adjacent car smile whilst your being shaken around like jumping beans in your smooth cat...It will take off then like a rocket with a slight hesitation setting in again at around 2000-2500rpm then I think I am not noticing any difference because of the momentom. After a motorway run it seems to be very Jag smooth for a short while, but I do notice a general roughness again. I have had a decoke and valves checked first because of oil leak at headgasket, and tried different plugs ngk-r bcpr6es, ngk-r bkr7evx and now champion rc12ycc. Any of you pistonheads got a notion as to the problem?? thanks guys in advance. jay
Hi there, judging by what you have said I would guess that a coil is breaking gown. Very easy to check. Remove the three T30 torx screws covering the plugs/coils. Then remove the 8 mm bolts that hold the coils. Then start the engine, then work your way along the coils, lifting each one slightly, you should hear the coil arcing out, ie a loud cracking type sound, if its not then thats where the fault is. To confirm this swap coil from another cyclinder and re-try. You say you have changed plugs, I would recommend that you use the correct Jag ones.
