Ok here's my query..bear with me..
3 lanes, i'm in middle one with car on left about 1 cars length behind after we'd accelerated from traffic lights (1.4 megane) I'm in a 2.0 megane, and assuming we'd travelled say 400m, it's safe to assume I wasn't accelerating unduly or 'hard'
We approach 2nd set of traffic lights travelling at 50mph when they turn red, i've got a clear road in front and plenty of space to slow, BUT man in green RAV4 decides to overtake me and cut me up at last minute causing me to swerve slightly and brake V.Hard (all of this with 4month pregnant wife and 1yr old child in my car)
I toot horn, and stop behind him. He then proceeds to get out, I wind down window and he shouts some very abusing language to me blaming me for accelerating? He started shouting some more after I said he cut me up,at which point I thought he was going to drag me out of the car and give me a beating (I was pooing myself) I wound the window up, and ignored him, and he stormed back to his car and drove off, leaving me and the wife pretty shaken.
Now I took his number plate, is there any point reporting it whatsoever? I'd appreciate your thoughts.
PS If I had been in the wrong any way whatsoever the wife would have had a go at me, and I would have apologised. However, he had his own lane to stop in but decides to cut me up rather dangerously instead.

I know it's little consellation, but I think it'd be best to forget about it and move on. Sadly, (although there seems to be more propensity to encounter them on the road!), you cross unreasonable, rude and self obsessed people all the time. It doesn't stop you want to jump up and down on them, but I think, unless he was actually directly threatening you and/or your family it'd be futile to try and take it further.

Any chance I could get his address from the number plate? I'll write him a nice letter at the very least.

Yes, you can get his address from the reg number.
Look on the DVLA website and get there phone number. Phone up and spend ages on hold and going through computerised options until you get to talk to a real person. They will want to know why you want the address, and if satisfied with the reason, they will send you a form.
You send them £2.50 and fill in the form ( again saying why you want the address ) and they send it to you.
2 points to bear in mind. Firstly, they may not give you the address if they are not satisfied about the reason for wanting it. In this case they may be concerened with how you are going to use the info.

Simpler solution - report him for a road-rage attack - assault doesn't need to include actual physical violence, just the threat of such, and road-rage as an offence even more so.
Police will find out where he lives and pay him a visit. Nothing much may come of it, but it'll go be recorded. Make a real play of your pregnant wife being next to you and afraid as well...can't hurt.

May well do that, it'll probably take ages, and come of nothing, but arseholes like him shouldn't be able to intimidate people.
I was shocked, and to be fair, I may have given him a slap, however erm...he was at least 6'3" maybe 17stone, bald (ok that means nothing) and generally looked very irate and scary. I'm a pen pusher, 5'8" and very good looking, understand why I didn't want to get out now!!

Yes. It is your civic duty to make this retard regret his bullying abusive and ill-mannered ways. Report him. He may do something worse. It might have been your Mrs in the car by herself - imagine that! Report him. Make his life hell.
Had someone get a touch of the old out of the car road rage with me years ago. I decided to report it to the police who went round and had a word his shell like. Don't know if it did any good but cost about 2 hours of my time and made me feel a bit better as it 'might' make them think before doing it to someone else.
THB if it was local to you they most likely would care less about another Assault CS order against them. I'd suggest you walk away from it unless you have the time to spend. I was a student at the time so an afternoon in the cop shop wasn't much of a PITA

I'm afraid that's a very dodgy thing to do if you have no escape route. (And it is arguably an illegal use of the horn).
It's all very well people saying stand up for yourself but you don't know what's going on in the other driver's head, he could on drugs, mentally ill or just plain not very nice. If he's all three then you're in a bit of trouble. Your duty is to protect your wife and born and unborn children, and you don't do that by getting angry and creating a hazardous situation.
I detained an off his head druggie who broke into our offices a few yrs ago and what did I get? A right bollocking for putting myself in danger.
