Thumbs up to Porsche Reading (warranty and service)...
Discussion
To all those who like to batter OPCs and the Porsche warranty...
I renewed my warranty in August on the GT3 and within a month, I needed a MAF sensor which Reading did under warranty without any complaints. Two weeks ago I took the car for its 24k service... Turned out it had a leaking RMS (yes it is a GT3) and two knackered coil packs. Both of which were done under warranty - no issues. Whilst the gearbox was out, they fitted a single mass flywheel and new clutch for the cost of parts only (-10% discount of course). I was also reasonably sure that the diff wasn't working so Reading extracted it and tested it on the bench with a torque wrench.. All still in spec after 21k miles and still had 8lbs of preload.
I should mention that the car was only booked in for a service but they managed to fit me in and give me a hire Cayenne S for the duration (God those things DRINK fuel). Car came back to me all shiny and well looked after.
Top marks to Stuart (service advisor) and Richard (Service controller)...

Dose anyone here have a Porsche that has actually been problem free? My heart is telling me YES but the more i stay on this forum and hear issue after issue then my HEAD says NO! Where is the bomb proof reliabilty that i have read about in Autocar for the last 10years??
It seems to be good thing on this forum that it gets fixed under the warranty?? I would think its a good thing if it never went wrong in the first place??
Sorry to go off your Reading OPC praise thread although they do seem to alawys get a good write up on here.

Sorry to rain on your parade but no car is bullet proof and Porsches are no exception. My experience shows that my 911 has gone wrong less than other cars that I have owned but they still have the odd problem.

Cool . I was thinking wether to put my car in to the local Porsche dealer in Bournemouth or the reading OPC as this is where I bought car from. I think you have swayed me back to reading as they have always been good since I bought car last year.

I Can't comment on Bournemouth as I have never used them.. I do like the fact that Reading is also next door to the UK main warehouse so you don't have to wait for parts if they are in stock next door.

I have had mine for 8 months, I bought a 996 (2000) from Reading OPC. So far I have spent 15 quid on a radiator cap and that's it. Yes I have the warranty but that's for peace of mind. It only works out approx 2.50 quid a day for that. So bar the 15 quid radiator cap mine has been trouble free

Richard appears to run a fairly good operation in the servicing dept. I have had cause to mail him with PRAISE before and with no warning whatsoever I dropped the car off this morning as dont need it until passing there again on Thursday; the brake pad light came on and there are a couple of really minor niggles need addressing. No probs as I can leave it with them for the four days.
"I am sure we will manage to fit it in somewhere, maybe even by end of business tomorrow".
No need for loan car so delighted with this customer focused approach.
ps - When Richard (Singleton) acknowledged my earlier mail, he mentioned that he would use the praise in an appraisal and mention it to Dan when he got a chance. This is a good sign.

On my second 997S
and touchwood, not a single problem!! I think some of the earlier cars had minor faults (including exhaust recall)......I had a 993 without any problems, and a 964 that did 50,000 miles without an hiccup...

Two questions.
Firstly, does this mean that it is safe to imply that retrofitting a single mass flywheel in no way affects warenty coverage (this has seemed to be a slightly grey area in everything I have seen written in the past, but at such point in the hopefully distant future that I need to have a clutch change: this really appeals as a mod).
Secondly - is it safe to assume that Porsche will be in touch when a renewal is due? I don't actually know when mine runs out as I got a years warrenty when I got it, but it was still in the original 2 years at the time (so should it expire in May or September)?

Why should it? Its standard fit on the 996RS and all MKI clubsports? Infact, it was the technician at Reading that told me it would be a good time to change the clutch and flywheel if I wanted to.
BTW - I should mention that I kept the old clutch to have a look at the wear.. After 21k miles the clutch was only half worn.

Yes, they let you know a month before it expires but you can also ask any OPC and they will tell you.
Cheers

If the techs at Reading suggested it then it should be fine I would expect. The potential way for Porsche to weasel out is that the single mass flywheel was not available on the Mk2. The Mk1 CS has some internal differences to the engine and drivetrain (less hp, lacking the steel synchros and gearbox cooler and so on) and the RS has a crankcase breather valve (I'll leave it to the engineers to explain exactly what that does), the engines were supposedly picked as the best on the line and they have different ECU programming (with the higher redline). Thus since the Mk2 engine as installed was never offered in a configuration with the single mass flywheel, they would have grounds to dispute in the event of a failure in the drive train.
Personally I would have expected it to be a sanctioned modification, but I have read of people asking Porsche about it in the past and being denied a committed (written) response. It is like the thing with changing the brakes - people have asked and been told that anything relating to the brakes (i.e. not just the disks, which are consumable anyway) would be discretionary (thus something like a hub problem or bearing failure could theoretically be declined).
I wouldn't expect any such things to be a problem, but just note the way that Porsche (even though they are by all accounts more than reasonable - except supposedly with RS wheels) like to cover themselves with an open escape clause.
