Hello

I have never owned a motorbike.

I'm looking at getting a Suzuki M800 (the "cruiser" style bikes).

Now since this is an 805 cc motorbike, do you think I would actually get insurance for it if it was my first bike?
Or would I have to have run say a 125 cc bike for a while first?

I'm 33 and obviously would need to get my license first.

Your age will help, but lack of experience counts against you. You also have to consider the insurance group of the bike too. Most importantly your postcode and how/where you intended to store the bike have major input to the premium too.
You can try some what if online quotes to see if you could get insurance, or simply call a few up.
Buy a copy of (MCN) Motorcycle news (out every weds) which always has insurance ads, alternatively use google to search for some online companies. Just assume for the purposes of the quotes that you've just got your full unrestricted cat A license. This will give the best indication.

I would think you would be able to get insurance, I'm 21, passed my DAS in December, and I've been quoted on a brand new Triumph Daytona 675 (£3000 fully comp, but they still quoted me).
I'm actually looking for a Yamaha XJ600N, as I can get insurance for that at a much more reasonable price, and the Triumph is slightly above my current capabilities.

www.autotrader.co.uk
click on the bike insurance section, fill in the form, see what quotes you get
be HONEST

this is one of those forms where you fill it in once and it checks several sites for you - worked a treat for me

Whatever you choose make sure you take the legal cover option.

I wish I did before getting flattened by a Post Office van

I would say yes but despite your age i think you will pay a lot for the first year or two.Insurance companys do not like people with no experiance and a new licence in my experiance. And as above always get legal cover although i think this should apply to car or bike.

Costs me £699 for a brand new (GP17) GSX-R750 K7 with only a year's experience under my belt, and I'm 27. My advice would be to shop around. A lot.

Yes but on the other side.. I payed £660 fully comp for a group 15 1999 R6, I'm 34 have over ten years experience, zero penalty points but live in an East London postcode and the bike is ungaraged oh and I have a total loss theft claim of £4.5k from 2005 all counting against me!!! My quote is by far the cheapest for my situation and I shopped around big time.
I'm sure if I lived somewhere lower risk it would more than halve my premium. I have a magic 1k a year barrier at which I will personally not exceed for bike insurance hence me currently not owning the CBR1000RR that I'd really like!

Funny one this. Was paying around £900 for the CBR600F SE London, ungaraged, offstreet FC last year.
Now have the Mille, and am at the last gasp reverse auction between Honda, A-Plan and Bikesure. The initial quotes have gone down from £1700 to £700, and I'm letting them have one last chance

PS Bikesure seemed to be offering fully comp on any bike as long as you had FC on a bike over 675cc. Which is nice. I've just confirmed this over the phone, and tis true. Right, does anyone have a Desmosedici I can borrow?

I'm 36 and live in Glasgow (so, high rolleyes ). Passed test and insured 02 600 Fazer next day for £400-ish fully comp. Bike lives outside, I have full NCB on car, zero on bike. I'm expecting insurance for larger capacity bikes to lower very substantially by the time I have a full years riding under my belt.

I'd expect you to pay a similar amount to insure the M800 once you pass, it's not a high risk vehicle. Try www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk for sample prices.
