emissions and MOT
Discussion
Anyone know much about getting a decatted RV8 through the MOT emissions test? My V8S failed today as co levels at idle were too high and the mechanic could not adjust it down sufficiently. It was fine at 2000 rpm though. The engine is 4ltr and significantly modified.
I think I once read a thread on this forum stating that someone had seen a paragraph in the MOT testers manual about some exemption/leniency for TVR engines. Apparently the tester of my car was in two minds whether to pass it but decided not too. It may that if he were presented with some official guidance towards some discretion he may reconsider.
Any help would be most welcombe!
Steve.

Wonder if it is my old car you have a 92 on a J plate, Mica Blue ? My V8s ran very rich at tick over I and no one else could figure out why. Tried a different ECU all the sensors seemed to be working correctly, changed the fuel pressure regulator, reset the throttle pot all to no avail. Other than that the engine was superb.
At MOT time I removed the bypass pipe (this is the pipe that feeds bypass air prior to the throttle butterfly to the plenum via the stepper motor controlled valve) and replaced it with a similar pipe but with the drain tap off a former heating system. This allowed just the right amount of un-metered air in to lean things up. The procedure for MOT was :-
Drive to the MOT station getting the car nice and warm. Pull up in a layby just up the road and swap the pipes. Adjust the valve to the point where it is just starting to have an effect on the tick over.
Present for MOT, receive comment about nice lean engine.
Return to lay by and swap pipe back.
Job done until next year.
Did that at least four times.
You have to be careful that the pipe is clear in the throttle cable and linkage, else it can be a bit embarrassing when it is driven onto the brake tester and the throttle sticks open.

Thanks Steve. I'll try that and see if it works.
By the way mine is a 94 in Brooklands green. I bought it last year from Harry W. It has been extensively modified but runs a treat with no reliability issues. Shame about bloody emissions regulation.
Thanks again.. I'll keep you posted.

Ah, as it is a 94 car you have more of a problem so I am not certain that my dodge will help. After 92 when cats were fitted the emission requirements are different and I would be surprised if a car that should have cats will pas without them. My 92 car had no cats from new and no Lambda sensors.

Check the Engine number, if the engine is a 1993 casing which mine is (in an early 1995 car) this takes precedence over the cars registration date. If it is pre 94 then you can remove the cat.

Arrrhh that explains it .. that Harry's a real rogue
I know he had Mark Adams put an omex mapped ignition on it - so surely all that is needed is some tweeking to the fuel map.
Why not give Mark Adams a shout as he knows your car.

How can I tell from the engine number what the casing date is?
What is the cut-off date for legal de-catting
Where can I obtain copies of regulations?
What documentation would I need to provide, proving I don't need cats at MOT?
Mine is a 94 500.
TIA

Hi Reverend,
I have decided to take the car to the garage that re-built the engine and did the modifications to it as hopefully they'll know what can be adjusted on it.( I'm sure this will be fine as they seem to have a very sound reputation). It would still be nice to know what adjustments can be made (and how) for future reference. Thanks for the advice though.
Steve.
Also when it does get through the MOT it would be nice to meet up with some of you guys when there's a meet.
