Hello,

Sorry, I know this is a very open question.

I take lots of pics of cars, and currently have a Canon IS 75-300 lens, which is really nice to use, but not that crisp at full zoom (although for most car shows that's really not an issue, but for motorsport events it becomes more of one)

I would like a lens somewhere around the 50-200 mark, to be used for mainly car shows and meets. Like all photographers, I really want nice crisp images.

Are there any lenses that jump out as a good plan, or should I just look around on ebay for anything and hope its OK?

I've got a canon 28-200, but the pictures dont seem that crisp - the kit lens takes nicer shots. - probably something I'm doing wrong, though.

Cheers muchly,

Alex.

A lot of stuff can affect the sharpness of a picture, & you need to work out the rough focal length your going to want.

Apature - usualy a lens has a sweet spot - typicaly f5.6 - f9 or so , afetr that diffraction starts making it softer.

Depth of field - to shallow and parts of the subject end up out of focus.

Shutter speed - too slow & you get camera shake, worse at longer focal lengths.

You can correct all of this by selecting the right settings, upping the apature, ISO, shutter speed, using an IS lens, and using a tripod (and flash).

Have a look through your collection of pics, pull out some your likely to want to take again (or similar), post em here with the exif data & what you like/dont like about them, 3-4 will do.

I upgraded my 75-300 to the EF70-200mm f4.0 LUSM lens, mostly because I shoot sunday football and motorsport on occaisions. The F4 whilst fitting my budget also is very light so is easy to use handheld, plus all the zooming is done internally so the lens length/balence doesn't change.

It's about £420 new so if you're lucky you could find one second hand down towards your budget.

Thanks for the advice - top stuff. I'll dig out some pics I like later, and post them up. most are at home though, so it'll probably be tonight.
