Hello all,

I'd like to give my 400mm lens a workout at some motorsport events, but I'm not a huge follower motorsports so I don't know what's on when.

Is there a calendar available, so I could look up one free weekend and see what's happening at various circuits?

Also, is there any info about good places in various circuits to stand for piccies?

Thanks

The BTCC (www.btcc.net) is always good for photo opportunities. I'd recomend the DTM and WTCC and A1gp rounds at Brands too (website on previous post). The EERC (www.eerc.co.uk) Britcar series is also good with lots of different cars usually racing.

The best places at Brands are on the banks at Paddock Hill Bend and at the top of the hill at Druids. (On the inside). Thruxton's best spots are the Chicane at the end of the lap and the Complex halfway round. Silverstone isn't so good for photos but the complex at the end of the lap can be good if you stand so you can see over the fence. If the racing is on the GP circuit there are some good spots at the top end.

The other excellent event for photos is the goodwood festival of speed which this year is on the 22nd to the 24th June. I'd imagine the circuit revival meeting is good as well, but I've never made it to that as it clashes with the BTCC.

Let me know if you want to know anything more specific.

As for shooting spots for UK circuits, just tell us which circuits you visit and an avalanche of advice will be yours

At Brands Hatch, where would people recomend taking pictures of caterhams with a 70 - 300mm!

I'm thinking the inside of druids, but not really sure.

Thanks

At Brands, try the outside of Druids as the cars come up Hailwood. There are gaps in the fence that you can stick a lense through.

This was taken there though I can't claim it as my own!

Druids at Brands is great if your lens is big enough...these at 400mm...

Nori Haga going in...

Troy Corsa backing it in...

and JT on the exit.

Martin.

Inside of Druids is good and you'll probably be at the short end of your lens. The outside looking down to Paddock Hill bend needs a slightly longer lens..

@600mm

There's some good spots out on the GP circuit if they use the full track.

Out in t'woods

Some of those might be at 400mm or so. Just shoot a bit looser if 300 is all you have or crop a bit if you can get away with it.

yes I only photograph motorsport and have only been doing that for 10 months but I have visited several tracks and would be happy to give you some tips on shooting spots. All the shots below were taken from the public side of the fence:

Oulton Park - Britten's

Brands Hatch Indy - Hailwood Hill

Brands Hatch GP - Sheene Curve

Donington Park - Between Redgate and Hollywood

Snetterton - Russell Bend

Mallory Park - Shaws Corner

Silverstone GP - Abbey

Cadwell Park - Hall Bends

Sorry for posting so many shots, I wanted to show that there is lots of good shooting spots even when you are stuck on the public side of the fence. Also don't often post shots at the moment so I got a little carried away.

Please feel free to email me through my profile if you think I would be able to help in any way.

Ray.

We must've been near each other on quite a few occasions last season as I went to several of those events!
