Ok, so there's lots of new laws in force (the latest mobile phone one just come in of course) .. and ignorance of the law is no defence .. so ..

can someone point me to the definitive current list of laws that we must all abide by .. after all if ignorance is no defence then they must all be nice grouped on a website somewhere that we can all go and see?

is there such a site and if so where is it?

cheers all

Are we talking about every law, or just traffic ones?

I have seen the law book that just traffic relies upon (Wilkinson?) which Vonhosen and Dwight somehow know off by heart and its about six inches thick!

It is my understanding though that the Highway Code, is like a Dummies Guide to it, and new versions are constantly updated with guidance.

I was thinking about every law not just traffic laws .. if we're supposed t abide by them then where are they published? was just thinking about how controlled we all are but i bet we know a tiny fraction of all the laws tht actually exist .. so was asking essentially where you get to find out what they all are

It's true, Fif, but RTRA for the first time online and many other important things are there, however.

I notice CUR is still nowhere online.

That takes you back to 1700 and odd which is when some of us were born?

There is no one that knows all the laws. It is question of having an idea of the area in question then going for the printed word. Even then not always 100 per cent which how lawyers make their moolah by hours of research.

They really make their money by knowing what the judge thinks the words mean.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" or in other words common sense.
That covers about 99% of things.

a big improvement, yes very much agreed, some surprising omissions, but give it time.

re CUR, one suspects, thanks to EU intervention, there isn't an "online" big enough....

I would say that it used to. I think the thrust of the OP is that it doesn't any more. With so many knee-jerk laws and "Doris's laws" being passed, I don't think common sense and a good moral code cover it any more.

Why can't I demonstrate outside the Houses of Parliament without giving notice? Why must I get a certificate to prove I can do electrical work before I'm allowed to add a new socket in my own house? Why can't my local councillor vote on things affecting her own parish when my MP is expected to speak up for his constituents?

Maybe we should just have say, a hundred laws max, if you want to bring in new ones you first have to repeal an existing one...that might concentrate minds on the right priorities.

Like I said "do unto others" covers most situations.
Don't speed through someone elses village unless you don't mind other people speeding past your front door.
Don't touch my wallet and I won't touch yours.
Don't walk the streets carrying a gun because you don't want others carrying guns.

Can you imagine what would happen if everybody was allowed to demonstrate outside the H of P.

Do all the electrics in your house then sell the place in 5 years, would you want to buy a house like that, as it happens I did 25 years ago, I'm glad people have to get a certificate.
