Currently have a thinkpad r51 and despite being "rugged" I would like to upgrade. Requirements are

weight - as light as possible
speed, very quick to start up and shut down ( a problem on the think pad)
substantial memory
reasonable for dvd games etc.
stylish
vista
and possible this new thing, where even when the laptop is powered down you can still access emails etc through a small window on the outside casing ( gimmicky or good?)

Consider the floodgates opened ( budget flexible)

Thanks

Spec any laptop with Core 2 Duo CPU, 3GB RAM, 14" display and 7200rpm hdd when you want a light and fast laptop.
Visit the Lenovo shop when you like the ruggedness of your Thinkpad, and proceed with a ThinkPad T60p (if it's already available in the UK).

IBM T60. The R series is a disgrace to the IBM brand IMO. Pretty much anything released in the last 6 months will run vista in some form or other, but look for ones that don't share graphics memory with the system RAM.

i would be concerned that they might be too heavy for what I am looking for, portability being high on my list of requirements, however having had 2 recomendations from the fine fellows of pistonheads I will go and have a look.

thanks

Try the HP laptop range, 2400 and 4400 for smallness.

Or a ThinkPad X Series - the thinnest and lightest ThinkPad notebooks.

MacBookPro!

Seriously.

I was looking for a powerful new laptop a few weeks ago and it came down to a Vaio vs the MacBook. I have Vista installed on it for games and use OS X for everything else.

I have one which I've just replaced with a MacBook Pro, but it's three years old and has been trailed round the country, used pretty much every day, and it's fine. Nothing's broken or failed or fallen off, and I only replaced it because I wanted one that would run Vista better. I've owned Dells and Thinkpads in the past, and I'd put the Sony on a par with the Thinkpad and way above the Dell for sturdiness and longevity.

same for me. My three year old Vaio was great, but too slow for Vista.
