I'm thinking of doing this mod to my bike

Basically fit clear a clear rear lens and incorporate the indicators at the same time to improve the appearance.

Assuming there's the usual stuff such as a reflector and legal plate is there any reason why it wouldn't pass an MOT?

Has it got a CE mark?

If so, then no worries, if not then they probably wont spot it anyway.

Looks like it might breach Road Vehicle Lighting Regs.

Minimum lateral seperation of 240mm required between rear indicators.

you may get away with it but indicators are supposed to be a certain distance apart .

Dunno about the CE, just checking.... Either way it's far more legal than the current solution paperbag

I thought there was a minimum distance apart indicators had to be or is that Constructions & Use regs as opposed to MOT?

Saw that about the distance after I posted. Is that an MOT fail or just a potential tug from your lot?

That's for reported by officer.

So it can be not legal but pass the MOT?

Not worried about the ethics of it all, I just don't want to mod it again only to have to put it back to standard for the MOT which I need before I put her back on the road.

MOT manual for motorbikes said:

[snip]The precise position and angle of visibility of direction indicators are not part of this inspection, but they must be on each side of the longitudinal axis of a solo machine[/snip]

Good enough for me, thanks

I know you may not approve but I'm trying to make it a bit less illegal than it currently is

The old Honda VFR400R NC21 and NC24 had this type of lamp arrangement and they pass an MOT

Remember the old Suzuki GSX750 Katana with the pop-up headlamp?
Same lighting arrangement!

Loads of scooters have similar too

Different seperation measurement for 50cc.
Age of bike is important as well.

As said though, not part of MOT, but is part of Road Vehicle Lighting Regs.

That surprises me, though I'm not questioning your expertise.

A valid MOT should result in a road legal vehicle I'd have thought.

The MOT doesn't check every Con & Use Reg either.
If it did it would take a lot longer & cost a lot more than it does.

a bit stupid to be a "pull" for it.

how many bloody new cars have the front indicators sittng right on yop of the headlight!!

cant see the fecking things!!

of course, if their are no indicators on it it should pass?

so long as its on the vehicle, it should work.

so if they're not on it, they cant fail it?

The spirit or the letter of the law. MOT and construction and use are 2 different issues.

If it looks right the MOT man won't spot it, but a GOOD VOSA man might.

I ask one question, why do you think CE regs define a minimum distance ? Not for the HELL of it ? In your quest for individuallity is there any other way of doing COOL indicators ? Could you put some LED's on the rear arms ? Just an idea to get you thinking.

PS I think it looks cool and I'd be tempted !!!

If you look at the back end the exhausts are exactly where you'd want to fit the indicators when you cut the back end down and there's nowhere else to mount them without cutting away expensive bodywork which I want to avoid.

I may have tracked down a unit that'll fit without modifying the bike at all apart from being able to cut the rear mudguard away, AND it's CE marked
