Presumably, there is at least one law that you disagree with, either because the punishment is clearly disproportionate or because the law itself is entirely unwarrented. How do you feel when you have to enforce it?

I disagree with loads of laws and lots of my forces policies. Unfortunately you have just got to get on and do your job. If you dont you will be disciplined for neglect of duty and dismissed.

Its a good question, but... you may or may not be aware that friendly BiB in the past have been disciplined for airing their own views on here.

Of course a provocative question like this - whilst of course I am sure your intentions are admirable - I do not think would/could be answered in the way that perhaps you intend.

Remember these forums are visited by the public and all sorts of bodies - the press, police authorities, defence solicitors etc - and such views could be used against our friendly BiB in a way they would not intend. I would suggest aiming the question at members of the public, or asking BiB which laws they MOST like enforcing and perhaps you could read between the lines without the risk of getting anyone in trouble.

I for one think that the contributions of the BiB on here are one of the best factors of this forum, and it would certainly be to everyones detriment if their position on here was made 'untenable'.

Of course you're technically right Justin, but if we/they don't speak up against ass laws that we disagree with then the conclusion must be we'll suffer ever more of them.

The next 'ban' could be smoking in vehicles, followed by wearing sun glasses, followed by listening to music, followed by picking your nose, followed by opening your mouth when driving. If we all bite our tounges and let the lunatics run the asylum through being fearful of objecting, they will more than happilly continue I reckon!

I think it's always been the case that alot of BiB don't believe in some of the laws they have to enforce. For instance they'll nick a driver for doing 90 on a motorway, but if they're off duty they'll just turn a blind eye, and rightly so! Which kind of makes nicking them when on duty a bit of a farce, but on it goes.

Smoking in vehicles (while driving) should be bloody banned!

I mostly disagree with the fact we are also at the moment being bulllied into a change in shift pattern by the chief constsable. Somebody offers me a job with almost the same salary I get now I would be off! Thats how it is at the minute.

Constantly hit with a big stick for more and more work (figures) then in return you get shafted for your trouble by senior officer(s) who only care about their own publicity. Perhaps because they want to be the next comissioner of the met?

The Police should be there to enforce the laws set by democratically elected politicians.

It is the laws and democratically elected bit I have issues with, not the police enforcement itself.

If the Police have any opinions, I should expect them to express them only in their personal life.

No data Im afraid, but common sense!

How can somebody driving along struggling to light up a tab be in proper control?? Or turning at a junction struggling to hold a tab?

Dont need data, seen it hundreds of times!

Well, people have been doing this for God knows how many years without problems. You might as well say that changing gear or changing radio channels or fiddling with the air con should be banned.

The difference being that your hand slipping off the air-con controls or radio knob doesn't result in a burning stick dropping in your crutch! That would definitely affect my concentration.

Fag stays in gob when you need your hands for controlling the vehicle. It's all about effectively managing the workload

I always thought it was a skill to be able to talk on the phone and eat a big mac at the same time!

I used to smoke, (many moons ago) and i crashed (bumped a kerb) because the smoke from the cig went into both my eyes so i was blinded for a minute or so and i dropped my fag by my feet!

So imagine the scene, driving along, blinded, eyes watering, and desperatly searching for the fag thats burning a whole in my carpet mats! Oh and driving, forgot about that!

Banning smoking while driving would be a good thing, it would also cut down on road side litter... (god i sound old now dont i)

A long time ago, just after passing my test, I was parking up my car behind a police car (just by his house) and I had a bottle of milk on the passenger seat.

As I braked, the milk bottle started to roll off the seat.

As I reached to stop the bottle from falling, I eased off the brake and bumped into the police car.

So I knocked on his door to confess - oh how we laughed.

Fortunately, it already had had a bump there anyway and was due to be fixed so it wasn't taken any further.

Lesson learnt though.

Baning smoking would be the best thing they've ever done, I know people that make roll ups whilst 'Driving'!
If you get so stressed driving that you can't go 2 hours without a fag then you should seriously think about giving up driving!!!!
Oh, and the total ban of phones whislt driving, hands free or not.

As I was once on my bike behind some cars, some smart Alec threw his lit cigarette out of his window straight into my open jacket.I had to stop immediately, otherwise he would have been force fed!Can you imagine the burn that could have caused me.If people would take the time to think of these things, the world would be a happier place.

Agreed. What should be the case and what is the case are unfortunately two different things though. It is unfortunate that times in the past that comments by BiB on here and even police officers 'blogs' have been the source of disciplinary procedures.

Of course, the comments they share on here are their own, however I can fully understand their situation. The BiB dont have a choice of the laws they want to enforce - although the situation is not much different for those working in the private sector. If I worked for a big corporation and didnt fulfil company best practices because I didnt agree with them or on a public forum discussed these issues whilst my employer was made publically obvious, I can guess that they wouldnt be best pleased!

If smoking is so bad for society that it placing an unbearable strain on the NHS, 2nd hand smoke is killing thousands of people and now smoking while driving is considered only one step removed from being a WMD then the government should have the courage to outlaw smoking entirely and ban tobacco products entirely.

After that they can ban the consumption of all alcoholic drinks because, as we all know, alcohol can be addictive and drunk drivers kill people.

Then they could ban all fast foods as they are unhealthy and lead to obesity and are again a strain on the NHS.

I know, let's ban TV because that encourages the couch potato mentality and stops people taking excercise leading to ill-health and puts a strain on the NHS.

Let's ban sexual relations between people that aren't in a committed relationship - that'll stop the spread of STD's and reduce the strain ...........

And now for the biggy. Let's ban all amateur sport and DIY. Visit any A&E on a weekend and look at the queues of sports-kit wearing and DIY injuries there. Must be a huge strain on the NHS.

I'm sorry, even though I've just given up smoking after ~40years for personal health reasons, the fact that these health fascists in government are trying to dictate every aspect of our personal lives really makes my p!ss boil.

Surely the thing to do is resign.

If enough police quit due to being unwilling to enforce all the thousands of pointless and nasty new laws the government would stop being such total asses quite quickly...
