Although i'm not interested in the music playing capabilities of this device, it appears to be a great piece of kit and looks to be my chosen device.

A couple of questions please..

Does it use a postcode database?

Can a route be programmed in manually and saved? E.g. a sightseeing event planned at home..

Do the European maps come included or are they extra cost?

TIA

1. Yes - in Europe as well.
2. No - although you can specify one en-route point. Alternatively just store all the points as 'favourites' and go from one to the next.
3. Yes - street level in Western Europe, slightly less detailed coverage in Slovakia etc.

Why not browse through www.garmin.com/manuals/nuvi660_ownersmanual.pdf
to whet your appetite!

Superb piece of kit - if you go to the US at all note that the new 670 comes with larger internal memory and has BOTH Europan and US maps loaded internally - so still room on the stik for other things (dunno where to get one though as Halfords still want to sell 660's).

Thanks for the advice guys.

My new Nuvi 660 arrived yesterday. Great piece of kit, especially the bluetooth handsfree.

Now i just have to find a way to mount it to the roll cage in my Noble.

I'm sure you'll soon realise that you made the right choice!

Incidentally, Software Version 3.50 is now available for download from myGarmin.

Still no North arrow though - a feature which was really useful on my nüvi 360...

Thanks for info. My idea was to modify a 2nd mount - get rid of the pivot arm, slot the base and tie wrap or similar up by the sunvisor...

BTW, does the speed camera database get updated by webupdater, or do i have to go elsewhere?

Tried all that with the rollcage and, apart from being a pain to install neatly, it seems to interfere with the TMC antenna cable up there.

Re the camera database - you get 90 days free - download it from MyGarmin (you need to set u an account (free) - very easy - I just updated mine.

Thanks for the heads-up on the new 3.50 s/w Nick. I only loaded 3.20 recently and they are supposed to email me when a new version is ready - but no email!

What's with the North arrow?

ALso, do you recall where you download the latest TMC software from (I did it once and can't find the page it now)?!

I've never had a software update e-mail either.

On the nüvi 360, there's a small North arrow on the left edge of the screen. This makes orientating yourself very intuitive when using the Track Up mode. But for some unaccountable reason, it's been deleted from the nüvi 660.... I rang Garmin and they confirmed it - and said that they hoped to resolve it with a future software release.

So far they haven't.

As for upgrading the GTM 21 firmware, go to web updater and follow the prompts. When it says 'proceed to check for additional updates such as voice updates', click next, then tick the box which says 'firmware update for GTMxx traffic receiver' and follow the prompts.

Not that I use TMC though - I haven't come up with a neat way of installing the fag plug thing and antenna yet. If only they made a 'permanent' combined TMC receiver and 12-to-5v power supply with just a single cable and plug for the Garmin mount which could be properly wired into the car's electrical system.

But the windscreen mount copes with my AMG suspension OK!

Incidentally, peterguk, the small socket on the lower right side of the case is a stereo audio socket, not a power socket as described in the destruction manual. So you can run external speakers from it if you like

I got one of those cassette tape input thingy's - connect the lead to the 660 and your music and nav instructions are output via your car system. The 660 (and other Nuvi's) even mutes the music when the nav instructions come out!

Part 2 of the TMC receiver firmware update:

After you download the revised firmware, the next time you plug the TMC receiver in, there will be the usual 'beep' followed by an on-screen message saying "Updating Traffic Receiver" or similar. After a few seconds the update is complete - that's all you have to do!

Interesting to compare the TMC screen layouts for the 660's GTM 21 against the 360's GTM 12 - the former are rather better laid out and easier to review than the latter.

Looks like there's new TMC software as of a couple of days ago.
