Bullet cameras (again) and one for Mr Carter
Discussion
I know relatively little about bullet cameras, but I am going to get a setup for snowboarding next week, also to be used on trackdays and whenever else I can find a use for it.
I have looked at the previous threads on here and I have decided on the following kit:
www.actioncameras.co.uk/acatalog/ActionCam_520_Helmet_Camera.html
Can anyone who has experience of these things confirm this is a suitable setup? I have tested my camcorder and the inputs all work fine (it's a faily old Sony Digital8 thing but acording to the specs it is 520 lines, it's a DCR-TRV740E or something like that)
And for Steve, where did you find the best place to put the mic when recording on your RS6?

We used an Archos and ActionCam when we went heil-boarding in Canada recently. It worked well, except that the connection from Camera to Recorder was a little weak and came off easily inside a jacket pocket. Some kind of screw-on connector would work better. The Archos itself was good quality, as was the camera. However, after day 2 it stopped recording video and on day 4 the Archos packed up all together. After that, I'd go for robustness over quality - it's no good if it doesn't record!

That's the bullet I use... very good quality.
On all my cars I just use a bit of foam and gaffa to keep the bullet secure and not damage the paintwork. Generally down by the numberplate. I did the same thing when attaching to my skid lid on track days. This was really useful as when I looked at passengers, I recorded the panic

So did the camera actually break or was it the Archos? I could fix up the connection no problem (none of them seem to have anything more robust)

You put the mic by the numberplate? Was that not bad for wind noise?

No no no no no no,
Camera on front - I usually had the mic in the boot of the Seven (wrapped in foam) or the footwell of the tin tops. Getting the mic level right is the most difficult bit IMHO, the mic they give you is WAY too sensitive. I suggest wrapped in foam in a pocket for snow-boarding (but I may be completely worng... it has been known

It's not been diagnosed by the manufacturer as yet, but the Archos did die when he got home - just wouldn't turn on. I'm sure in a car, securely held down it'd fare better than in a jacket in cold temperatures being bounced around with minimal padding. I'd definately recomend the combination; I beleive the camera was a specific one for the Archos recorder.
phil,
I got one for this winter and have skied with it velcroed to my goggle strap, just a bit of fine tuning on the angle each time to check that all was level and pointed in the right direction
.
I use a Canon miniDV camcorder with no problems so far with the mic tucked into a pocket of the carry case. Still some wind noise but voices do get recorded if they are close.
I would suggest that you need a moving subject to follow, my footage with no subject has less impact.

Good choice, ive had the 480 version (into a canon mv6i) for about 6 months now , use it for mountain biking , just come back from my 2nd week of boarding with some good results , frontwards backwards looks good but sideways(oooeer missus) realy looks good if your with mates . bit boring on your own.
Well I had a bit of a shocker with the bullet camera the other day, I was zip tieing it to the front grille of the car to do some testing and managed to cut the cable about 2 inches after it comes out of the camera!
Anyhow I managed to get a friend to solder it all back together and shrink wrap the connections, it all seems to work fine at the moment!
Tip: Keep scissors well away from the camera!
