Chaps,

Is there a company, anywhere in Christendom (or beyond, if need be) capable of affixing to a Porsche 993, a windscreen.

A windscreen which, when having been placed into the glorious cavity of Butzi's morphed development, does not creak the creak of the death throes of the Mary Bastard Rose.

And please, no top tips about greasing around rubber seals et al, it doesn't work.

This never happened until the f@cking thing was replaced several months ago and this is the THIRD stab at the job.

I'm renaming this wretched money pit 'Christine.'

Please, PLEASE, some useful recommendations - I can't be the only sod who's had this.

Sorry DeR, I feel your pain, but they had three goes at mine before they got it right.

RGA in Vauxhall (right up your street I realise ... err, not) acted as QC and finally got it right.

I had exactly the same thing....8 years of perfect factory fit squeakless windscreen. Cue Porsche approved windscreen fitters and genuine item and along came the squeak which everyone talked about.
The fix does work, the 996 part # cord thingy pressed in like a gasket between the edge of the screen ond the body and then fill it with Pedros ice wax (a bike chain lube).

For me this makes it squeak free for about six months until the lube dries up, I ran out and used WD this time and seems to have done the trick

Thanks but what I don't understand is how the factory do it perfectly without the need for 'fixes' and yet everyone else seems incapable of replicating what is surely quite straightforward?

I've had replacement windscreens before but never had this crap to contend with on any other make or model.

Mine was like that and i had a windscreen bloke fill it with his black mastic stuff that he uses for bonded windscreens.
Did the job perfectly

Its b0llocks isn't it ?
I always thought it was a myth with my perfect factory fitted item until the time came where it was difficult to see through it when the sun hit at a certain angle and I thought naively that factory trained people could do the same job.....not

Ask any OPC for the cord or "bungee" with the 996 part number (they must suffer as well ?) then get some bike chain lube (Halfords sell Pedros ice wax)put the straw thingy on the end (like WD40 can), peel back the seal round the screen (once the cord has been fitted) and liberally soak the cord in lube, finally wash the area and enjoy

The part number for the foam stuff from a 996 is rumoured to be:

996 541 903 00

I'm just about to go through the same thing (or hopefully not) as my windscreen has cracked. Apparently the downside of the foam is that it can make the rubber bulge a bit (but not sure if its true).

Have fun

Cheers guys, I'm going to give it to the local OPC in the morning, life's too bloody short for this interminable messing.

Unless I park it in the ship canal tonight and get a proper car.

Sorry, no direct experience of screen squeaking.

However on cabriolets there is much squeaking of rubber on glass, and this is instantly fixed by using silicone grease on the rubber. It makes horrific screechy squeaking completely silent, it really does work like magic.

It sells at plumbers merchants for peanuts, they use it to condition and lube rubber O rings, it is very good for rubber.

It does stop glue/paint etc sticking too - so it you use it, keep it local. Use latex gloves if you can too. I suspect you'd need to pull the windscreen to do it properly in your case.

Vic, the Teflon tape does not always cure the 996 screen squeaks, hence Porsche came out with a further "anti squeak kit", Der I think it is called just that, sorry can't be any more help with a part number.

As to why this happens after a new screen has been fitted, IIRC every 997/996 Boxster windcreen aperture is scanned by laser on the production line at Porsche before the screen is then applied to the aperture by robot.

This ensures the screen is absolutely central and thus no undue pressure is applied to any one side of the screen rubber which is the cause of the squeaks.

When Billy "fag in his mouth, I do this all day every day, so's I must be an expert" comes over from Autowindscreens, he has nothing more than his eyes to line things up with (thus if he's had a few shandys the night before your totally f*cked)

My 993 RS screen was so badly aligned you could hardly see the chassis number let alone get the trim strip to clip into its recess !

Autowindscreens chap put the window in my M3 then told me the outer seal was knackered, I took his word and ordered one from BMW and said I would fit it myself. When it came to fitting the window seal you could throw it in at one side and on the other had no chance in hell of getting it in.

Thanks, Slippy, got any bullets?

VC, cheers, will ask.

Must say, last time I tried the local OPC the solution appeared to be of the distinctly 'sharp intake of breath whilst clamping well used fag 'twixt thumb and index finger' variety...

Oh well, it's Thurday which = madras which = high speed blitz which = unfeasible wind noise which = no creak.

"Sorry officer but I can only avoid the creak above 150 or with the bloody Foo Fighters fighting and I really can't stomach that bloody album again, ok?"

I can then push on for the day's final embolism with a nice, calm round of balanced poltical analysis from the BBC via Dimbleski & QT.

Oh, the joy.

Now I know it's not the done thing to talk up OPCs but... Bristol OPC replaced the windscreen on my 993C4S - now I don't know who they actually got to do it but whoever it was did a perfect job. No grubby marks, scratches or anything unsavoury anywhere near where they'd worked - just a spanking new windscreen that was as silent as could be. Now I'm a picky bugger and I was expecting to have something to grumble about but nope - a perfect job.
