Hi Guys,

I've taken the plunge and ordered my first Jap Car in a long time.... a new 2007 Subaru WRX 2.5 230BHP (for the right price of course).

I'm going to allow the car to bed in for 1000miles, then at the 1st official service (oil change) i aim to have the car 'enhanced'.

I've been chatting to Litchfield/Powerstation and they have two main 'power' options i could go for (both delivering around 300bhp):

1) EcuTek Re-Map, 3" Milltek Exhaust & Sport Cat, K&N Filter (£1399+VAT)
or
2) As above but with De-Cat instead of Sport Cat (£1149+VAT)

Soooooo, could any of you Subaru experts answer me the following:

a) What are you experiences/opinions of Litchfield/Powerstation and would you recommend their work?
b) As my car will be NEW (no MOT for 3yrs)... would you recommend option 1 or 2??? Is it illegal to have no CAT or is this only an MOT thing?
c) Do i have many other options (with other companies) and what are they?
d) Do the above prices look expensive or are they about right?

Any advice would be very welcome.

Many thanks in advance.

If you check out the 'Powerstation' website it claims 290bhp for both options but general opinion is some cars get more, some cars get less.

The 'sport' CAT is said to be almost as free flowing as the De-Cat but is a bit more expensive.

Powerstation's work is excellent in my personal experience.

For the full range of tuning options (including radical stuff) best to ask on www.22b.com where they really know their stuff.

my unexperienced opinion is this:

1) sporrt cat sounds much more civilized than de-cat, 95% as much power, still sounds nasty

2)what about Cobb tuning? theyre the first i think about when i hear soobaroo tuning

Litchfield in my limited knowledge seem to have a very good reputation, and I'm pretty sure you can be safe in the knowledge that what they suggest will be way within the tolerances of the engine/drivetrain. Graham Goode Racing are another company with a good rep.and it might be worth contacting www.haywardandscott.co.uk regarding exhausts and the tuning companies that they work with.

AFAIK it isnt illegal to not have a cat, its "merely" an MOT fail if you cant pass the emissions. You dont HAVE to have a cat fitted to pass the MOT per ce, but if you dont you'll have no chance of passing the emissions.

Just put it back on before the MOT.

Is the PPP still available? Wouldnt this be a better idea, without invalidating the warranty.

Based on where you live, I would go with the Powerstation kit.

Test drove one the other week and was impressed.... the handling was good, the new 2.5 engines are very torquey and they're well built.

With prices so reasonable a the minute (dependant on how well you do your research!), they're a good basis for some subtle tuning too!

Try one... i did and mine arrives in a couple off weeks!

You can get a brand new 2.5 STi UK car for £21K. For that sort of money it's worth taking the car to WRC Technologies, Litchfield, Scooby Clinic, Roger Clark and others. In my experience Graham Goode don't specialise in Subaru's and they get all their info out of a book, although they did exchange some bits, just about, that they supplied wrongly after much discussion, so i doubt i will go there again.

Look around there are loads of tuners but the 4 tuners above are some of the more reputable and experienced ones.

Have used power station, they were ok - not great just ok, I am not planning on using them again, this is mainly due to the distance, it they were down the road I might have used them again.

If you can rather than go for a standard WRX + upgrade go for a standard STi, its a much better car than the WRX.

The 2.5 litre engine has a weak point being the pistons can not take much tuning compared to the 2.0l units.

Also if you are buying new this remap will invalidate your engine and gearbox warranty, and put your insurance up! you can go for the PPP pack for £1700 and keep the 3 year warranty with the car.

But powerstation have a good reputation, i would use them but i am over 100 miles away.

Roger Clark are very good, but by god do you pay for it!

Scoobyclinc are fantastic.

Litchfield and WRC have good reps.

What amazed me about Scoobyclinic was how bloody cheap they are for doing clutches inc fitting. Nobody else gets near them but as much as i would love them to do mine they are a fair way away from me in Chesterfield and i'm in Northampton!! However...they are all bloody good but you're right RC are a bit pricey....then again they really know about Scooby's and famous for Rally prepping them.
