RACE SUSPENSION
Discussion
SO...LOVE THE CERB SO FAR but......THE GUY PAID 2700 ON THIS UPMARKET RACE SUSPENSION....AND HAS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED ITS CRAP..YES THE CAR HANDLE LIKE A RACE CAR BUT...IF THERE IS A SLIGHT ANGLE IN THE ROAD THE CAR HEAS OFF IN THAT DIRECT AND WHEN U HIT AN ANGLE LIKE THAT AT SPEED IT CAN BE VERY SCARY...ALL I HEAR IS THE ROAD...ALL I FEEL ARE THE BUMPS..WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IS DAMPENING ..I AM USE TO NOT FEELING THE ROAD..THIS FEELS LIKE THE SET UP OF A PIMPED FIAT UNO....SO IT HAS TO GO...ANDY FROM APM HAS ALREADY ADJUSTED IT WITH A BIG IMPROVEMENT ..BUT BETTER SHXXT IS TIL SHXXT..
SO WHAT DO U GUYS RECOMMEN//I AM FAMILIAR WITH NITRON BUT I SEE THAT IN THE SAME FIAT UNO MARKET...WHAT I WANT IS HIGH END SUSPENSION THAT CAN REALLY MAKE THE CAR HANDLE BUT WITH SOLID EFFECTIVE DAMPING....
PS..I FEEL A LITTLE GUILTY COS ALL I DO IS JUST ASK AND DONT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO GIVE ANYTHING BACK...SO IF ANYONE WANT SELF DEFENCE LESSONS THEN I AM YOUR MAN...

Nick, if money isn't an issue and you want the best best, then just get some quad adjustable Penske dampers!

and hire some Penske technicians for a few days to set them up on your car to your preferences on your favourite roads.

Or alternatively listen to suggestions on here which will probably be a lot more sensible

.Andy has lots of involvement in TVR racing, so I know you're in good hands there, lots of Cerb owners use his services. From what you posted though, he seems to have got the best out of what you've had fitted on the car, rather than changed it, if you see what I mean. If you have a race biased setup on a car, more likely than not it will be running stiffer springs than you would for road use, giving you a harsher ride. You can improve things a little by backing off the damping. All the dampers do is control (restrict) the movement of the springs, so less damping will also gives a softer ride and be more pleasant to you. This is what I suspect is what Andy did. You obviously need to run some damping otherwise the car will just kick off any bump in the road you hit.
Anyway, what I'm wondering is which make of shocks you have, with a view to taking them off the car and sending them back to the manufacturer, so they can be changed to a road spec and put back on the car. This shouldn't be horrendously expensive and I can't think of an aftermarket damper used on TVRs which can't be rebuilt in this way. It's certainly cheaper then replacing all of what you have with a new suspension setup (which might actually be very high quality, just setup to do the wrong job).
Hope that helps,
Steve.

You ought to be able to get them rebuilt, however I've not heard of anyone else with Spax on a Cerb, so there may not be anyone experience of what a suitable setup is. Who fitted the kit originally - you might be best going back to them. I would add though, that the original price you mentioned seems steep, when the top end spax google shows are the RSX which are only £750 or so a set - the rest of the setup should not cost £2k!
In terms of top quality suspension kits, you're looking at Nitron, Intrax, Penske and Ohlins. If you want to get things spot on and can afford the extra setup time, perhaps a 2-way adjustable setup would give you extra control, however you could argue for the road that it is overkill.

Good quality shocks are pointless if they're incorrectly valved for the car. Trackcar installed Protech shocks on mine are very effective. They may be cheaper than the others listed but THEY WORK and haven't broken. I call that a success story. More so BECAUSE they were cheaper than the others listed.

Good Point Mars - I went for Gaz Gold on price, was really impressed with the quality when they arrived, well impressed with the way they improved the car and chuffed to bts because they'd cost me half the price of Nitrons. But if you want to race seriously on the track then Nitrons seem to be highly recomended.

Andy knows his stuff. Get him to put Gaz on - you will be ever so pleased with the result. Sell the old stuff on ebay. And change the posts here to 'I had some great suspension....'
Im going for a Gaz set up in the next few weeks,in what way have they improved your car? at the moment im running Red-Line dampers and springs. Redline are very poor and not recommended (as fas as I understand).
I dont have GAZ but I use Andy and he was raving about them. I nearly swapped my nitrons for them BUT it went haywire on here and a big bun fight broke out and so I decided to stay clear (as any results would be worthless as there was a bandwagon etc).
If I was near Chesterfield then I would go to Joolz and get his protech stuff (or Nitrons etc)
If I had a bigger budget I might consider some of the other makes.
If I wanted to spend a reasonable sum and lived near APM then I Would go for GAZ.

All good points and it comes down to money as always.
I don't believe you have to go stupid on shocks unless you are endurance racing, for trackdays, sprinting or even Tuscan challenge(which is only 20min sprints) a twin tube shock will do the job as long as it has good quality oil and a little gas bag to help stop cavitation.
For those who want complete control of their damping I would suggest that a double adjustable twin tube shock would out-perform a single adjustable Monotube such as Nitron or Ohlins and there are several on the market.
Jonny W and Its all Yellow are running my versions in the Tuscan Challenge this year and I have no fear of underperforming and guess what, £780 plus the VAT for a full kit with springs. You don't have to spend loads of dough.
Mind you Andy (Guillotine)is trying my gas charged remotes on the Griff this year.
Sorry I forgot to answer the original post.
Get one of the many good guys out there to check out your set-up and geometry before you start spending any money; is my advice.

If you're going for a bog standard setup then its just a matter of getting the right spec components and bolting them on. The higher you are aiming, the more important it is to get the whole car set up to suit you. Getting the right settings is easily more important than choosing the right components. Start by deciding who is going to set the car up for you, talk it through with you, make sure they understand what you are trying to achieve and what your constraints are, then get them to recommend the most appropriate components and set them up for you. I do recommend you buy the components through them too if you can. Firstly because they will be able to negotiate a margin on the price so they will benefit financially. Secondly from a purely selfish point of view it means you have a single person responsible for it all fitting and working. If you supply your own parts for somebody to use you are always left with the danger that when it goes wrong the parts supplier will blame the fitter and the fitter will blame the parts supplier. You of course will be left carrying the can.
I had the same handling traits on my 4.5 when i bought it, and after fighting with it on a trip round the lakes, feeling it was going kick me where it hurts at any moment!!, i came home and ordered a set of GAZ adjustables from Absolutly Shocks - TVRCC special offer £529 shock & springs. changed the car completely. it now copes with everything north yorkshire throws at it!! Absolute shocks Tel 01707 334819. It worked for me!! hope it helps - happy blasting!! from this
