So, the TT is currently in for a service, and Porsche Guildford have just called to say that it needs new disks and pads all round. They are coming back to me with a price shortly.

two questions:

1) Any idea how much it'll be ?

2) Does anyone know of viable after market alternatives ?

3) take it to an independent for them to check and confirm if it needs doing

4) DIY

If I had a quid for everytime this gets posted...

not aimed at the OP, more to the bare faced cheek of the OPCs

Forgive my naivity, but is this a possible "lets see if we can sting him for disks and pads" thing ??

depends, as this topic comes up with amazing regularity - I'd be surprised if there wasn't a post like this at least once every couple of days

the brakes may genuinely need doing but FWIW I'd do them myself - easy job

Recently quoted £900 for front pads & disks on my 996TT.
I think the rear disks are smaller so slightly cheaper, but you are probably looking at the think end of £2k for a front & rears.

Yeah, thought that might be the case. Could do without it to be honest.

I'll happily do it for half that

Discs (if they're genuinely worn) excluded but pads take about twenty mins per side including jacking up and getting the wheels off!!!

Yep indeed, me too. Check the thickness of the disks - they might be able to skim / re-drill them which will extend the life. Pads again get them checked - a pad warning light comes on when they have about 1,000 miles left in them.
I can't really complain - original pads & disks on a 2002 car with 32k miles on it now.

I've gone through lots of discs and pads due to cracking the discs. Full details and costs from OPC Bristol including Porsche club 10% discount in my profile.

As mentioned a bit can be saved by doing the work yourself.

OPCs will normally advise doing the discs and pads if they do not anticpate them lasting until the next service, hence the brakes may or may not actually need replacing yet.

More than a bit in my opinion Daz.... The bulk of the cost has always been labour when I've had brake work quoted at me.

Oh & not sure if this applies elsewhere, but at Guildford OPC, PCGB membership does not apply to parts used as part of the service or during an MOT, but only bought over the counter parts.
So you can buy pads & disks over the counter, leave them on the front seat & book the car in to have them fitted and you get 10% off, but not if they use parts from their stores during a service or mot etc....crazy !!

Oh & also I got a quote from a specialist who quoted similar parts prices but then quoted just £85 + VAT to fit front brakes, and £85 to fit rears.

Front Pads Turbo / C4S Price: £69.00

Front Disc Turbo/C4SLeft Hand Price: £140.00

Front Disc Turbo/C4S Right Hand Price: £140.00

Rear Pads Turbo / C4S Price: £48.80

Rear Disc Turbo/C4S Left Hand Price: £124.00

Rear Disc Turbo/C4S Right Hand Price: £124.00

Parts cost in total for a full set of TT brakes parts, £645.80

I couldn't find prices for the anti-squeal shims, but still that's well shy of £2K.

Just grabbed my 996TT servicing file.

Last set of fronts were done in March 06 and the total price price included VAT and a brake fluid change. Less a 10% discount for Porsche club membership:

£151.47 Labour to change discs and pads.
£71.28 Labour to change brake fluid.
£137.34 Brake disc
£137.34 Brake disc
£1.41 4 * countersun?
£147.51 Set of Brake pads
£12.60 2 * warning co (sensors)
£78.12 4 * damping plates
£8.39 4 * Pan Head S?
£12.06 Brake Fluid

£132.36 VAT furious

£888.68 TOTAL

Strip out the costs of brake fluid change (£71.28+£10.86)*1.175% VAT

£96.51 Cost of brake fluid change.

£792.51 cost of new discs and pads on front axle. Labour element is £177.98.

I take it the price difference on pads is between Porsche genuine ones and those rubbishy Textar ones?

Less than people with PCCB mk 1s or after the Porsche Forum curry and lagerfest in Cambridge last year.

So of all the costs I've listed above, aside from labour which bits can be got cheaper elsewhere?
