having finally tired of tugging at an inertia belt that won't budge (comes as standard on all griffs I believe..) i now have a set of second hand Willans harnesses with spring clip attachments...sooo....I guess I need to replace the inertia belt fixings with eye bolts. Can anyone offer advice on this? looking on demon tweeks website it seems they come in 1" or 2" variety. which ones will I need? ta

The standard eye bolts are 3/4" long. They are also available 1 1/2" long. You will need the longer ones. The people who sell harnesses should be able to supply the longer eye bolts too.

Do you have any roll-over protection? A harness without roll-over protection can be a fatal combination.

also on my dax cobra ive just sold you had to mount the harness behind your head on the bodywork they sold a relocating kit for older cars this was basically an upright piece of box section with a screw thread in one end to fasten harness to and the other fixed on the chassis member with a ferward facing brace also bolted down the other end was just long enough to touch the underside of the body snd a hole cut in the fiberglass in line with it to bolt harness down this was needed for the sva prob for a good reason

For 4 point harnesses you need 2 rear mounts. On the precat you really have to have a rollbar fitted as there is no other provision. The 500s have a 'rear harness mount' but there's only one so you really need 3 point harnesses. I don't know whether you can fit both rear mounts of a 4 pointer to a single eye bolt. Personally I wouldn't chance it. Does your car have a 500 chassis?

Tower View do the eye bolts by the way.

My early 93 Chim did ; & I'm sure a lot of others have found the same
I cant see them being effective without mounting like rollbar tho....

My 2p is dont replace the seatbelts; 1) MOT problem, 2) you will quickly tire of getting in/out of harnesses.

Have you tried them in another car?

You can. But having rollover protection is the fundamental limiting factor imo. Without that, a harness (any harness) is a bad idea.

thanks for all the feedback chaps. J524 was fitted with a late chassis 2 years ago so the mounts should be there. but...

- why should there be a MOT issue? (assuming they've been fitted correctly etc)
- why is rollover protection such an issue? I assume it's to do with getting out in a hurry (assuming you've survived the roll. and then I would say it's easier to release the catch on a harness that's right in front of you than fumbling for a catch jammed down the tunnel by the seat squab??
- doubt that getting in/out of harness any more tiring than inertias that don't work properly....the car isn't a daily driver anyway.

look forward to your comments
ta

If you roll the car wearing a standard seat belt then you are likely to get squashed but there is still a fair bit of space for you over the tunnel and you have a good chance of surviving.

If you are wearing a harness then it will hold you upright and the road will intersect you at chest height. You will be literally between a rock and a hard place and the chances of surviving a roll that leaves the car upside down are slim to none.

He's right, you know. Have a look at the picture here;

And then ask yourself what would happen if you were upright by a harness.

hmmm... I take your point but it seems marginal. and presumably in other (more common) crash situations a harness has the edge over the inertia reel? (especially ones that have been mounted in a less-than-ideal angle as per the Griff!) I have considered a roll cage but they are not without problems too. best rule has to be just to make sure, as always, that you don't drive faster than your angels can fly.
