Any advice chaps...?

£2000 with history, and a new auto box few months back with a bill of £1695.

Had a drive, seems smooth and OK...if in need of a bit of a clean.

I like the idea of squeezing a bit more 'ooomph' out of it...and there is a small dent on the roofline where the spoiler would go on a Legnum [idea]

What do you think ? ?

Was it an actual new or rebuilt autobox, or just a replacement out of a wrecked car? If its out of another car (which you'd have no knowledge/miles/etc of) then you should probably be prepared to replace it as well if need be. Not saying its gonna be cr@p but theres a reason the first auto was replaced, they reach a point (80-100k miles iirc) where they need a rebuild, but often people just find another box to replace it as its cheaper to do that than the rebuild.

You still looking at these?

I killed my Leon, and since it had become the errands car anyway (I killed it on the fun route back from the shops), I'm thinking of replacing it with an estate, and the 2.5V6 Galant is in my thoughts.

Haven't driven one yet, so wondered if you had any useful viewing experiences to share... or any other ideas on estates around the 3k mark. Missus won't go for a Volvo or a BMW, which as far as I can work out leave this option, or an Octavia!

That one is still for sale i think...and is in the PH Classifieds..

I drove it, and it went OK...leather and extras etc...apparently it had a gearbox replacement not long back.

[I felt it was a bit "in between" for me, as I either wanted an economical estate and an luxo-bomber-barge, or an economical hatch and an luxo-bomber-estate.......in the end I went for a little 2003 Astra DTi estate for the other half...60mpg....now I am hunting a big old barge ]

I decided I prefered the 3.0 Elite [or even better MV6] Omega estate...but its an OK exaple and I think you could bring the price down a bit

Well thank you kindly.

An in-between is what I am looking for - estate, motorway-proof, cheap.

This is because these days anything over 1000kg just annoys the hell out of me when tatering it, track or road, so I'm also going to sell the yellow peril when the finance runs out, and get something more focused.

Or possibly just join the Caterham academy next year...

Galant V6 / VR4 was my 2nd choice after the Alfa 156 Wagon - The wagon is superb, but the Glant might be slightly more reliable...... I used to have a 2.0 standard galant estate and loved her to pieces.

The main cause for concern with the tiptronic boxes seems to be the torque converter and there is a company in Kent replaces them pretty cheap with stronger internals.

For 17 hundered quid, I'd hope it wasa spanking new unit.
If you do feel like you may replace it in the future, then Giles at Japco does manual conversions very well for about 1.5k and gives you some money back for your old unit and pedel box.

www.clubvr4.com for all your 8g Galant questions, it's a pretty comprehensive site if you don't mind forking out £20 for the membership.
The Galant auto boxes are pretty strong, the torque converter seals are the main culprit for failures and that's only if the oil isn't changed regularly enough and if the incorrect oil is used. A few members from the above club have started a company called WRD Motorsport based near Stoke and they mainly service and look after the club members cars at greatly reduced prices.

mtv dave, would'nt mind some contact details for those guys you've mentioned, especially the manual conversion chappy as a few members are wanting to do a swap over.

I can't send you an email mate - send me one and I'll pass on more details, but to start www.japco.co.uk/
Japco are FTO specialists, but the 6A12 and the 6A13 engines and drive chain are similar enough to not create them any issues I'd've thought.
Giles is the nice chappy who owns it and it's his mobile you call when you phone.

I'll have to dig around for they guys in Kent, it's been a long time since I last called them.
ETA - found them - they are Sussex based, not Kent, sorry (it was all just 'South East England' to me at the time)... www.sussexautos.co.uk/performance.html There are others, but not many places had any web presence when I last looked in TCs - that was about 3 years ago.
