My chamois has picked up some dirt.....what's the best way to clean it?

Sorry but the nearest wheelie bin and buy a waffle weave microfibre towel, you can sling them in the washing machine time and time again with no ill effect. Not forgetting they absorb up to 10x more water than a chamois and offer better protection from picking up dirt and marring the paintwork.

To clean the chamois leather rinse it in lukewarm water with a mild non-alkaline soap, or a mild detergent. Squeeze or use a chamois wringer to remove excess water. Gently stretch the chamois flannel and hang to dry in an area protected from direct sunlight and intense heat. Take care not to over dry.

Ditto what RR said, far less risk to begin with IMHO, and you can chuck 'em in the wash.
