Dead Wedge

Just gone to start the car for the first time in a week, battery is less than 0.1volts. The charger would not even try to charge it so removed the postive terminal. The main (starter feed?) cable looks Ok but the other two small ones are almost shorted to earth. Before I start ripping things apart are there any obvious known areas to check first, or is it likely the battery has just suddenly become useless? The car has never had any issues with wiring before and ran perfectly when put back in the garage a week or so ago.

I've always found that most batteries just suddenly die one day, quite often just as you turn the key.
Last time it happened to me was on me Julie's Punto at a zoo in western France... luckily we were able to bump-start the car and get to a Casino hypermarket that had one on the shelf

The other wires probably measure close to ground due to the resistance of whatever they're connected to...
