Tiptronic Boxter?
Discussion
I've found a car I like, ticks all the boxes except one - it's a tiptronic.
Am I right in thinking that it'll be a 4 speed (1998 model) box? How do they compare to the manual versions? What's the performance difference?
I like the idea of not having a clutch change to worry about and I don't mind driving autos but I don't want it to be a lot slower or a lot worse to drive!
Thanks!

The 1998 Boxster has a rather small engine (2.5) with just about enough power. In a manual it feels brisk at best. Tip takes away the last bit of edge the engine had with its unfavourable gearing. The engine sounds stressed at all times. As I wrote, don't even think about it
Don't even think about thinking about it. Don't even think about not thinking about it. In fact, don't even think about thinking about thinking about it or not thinking about it. Just forget it.

agree completely (and i have said that without thinking)
i had a 2.7 boxster - great car, pulled hard, lovely sound track
was given a 2.7 tip as a loaner a few months ago. absolutely horrible. no noise, no power (relative) and no involvement.
felt like a completely different car.
usual mantra applies. rearrange these words into a common phrase of saying.

Damn you guys! I wanted someone to say that the Tip is far better than the manual, goes faster and owning one makes you better in bed too!
The car has done 50k miles, it's a good colour, has 18" rims, climate, full leather, FSH and it's at a dealer with 1 years warranty so would be ideal if it wasn't for the gearbox. All the manual ones seem to be upwards of 80k miles and as I'm likely to do 10-15k a year in it I'd rather not be saddled with a 1XXk mile car to sell after 2 years.
Well, the search continues, although I might have a drive in the Tiptronic one at the weekend, just to see if you lot are right or not....

I am of course a terminal liar. Labour are the best govenment to ever rule the uk. Ferraris are far more reliable than Porsches. Fat women are more attractive than thin.
You see just can't stop myself!

I've found a few more nice looking ones with manual boxes so all is not lost, some are even 2.7 models if I get one with higher miles.
I'm still slightly concerned about clutch lifespan and replacement costs though, anyone got any input?

if you take the car to an indie a replacement clutch is about £600 fitted

That's reasonable. I was told it's £1,000-1,200 by one specialist and thought it was a bit pricey. I work for a car parts company too so I guess it won't break the bank, I might even be able to get the bits to do it at cost price.
Anyone want to buy a 29k mile 55 plate Mini One 7 for £9995 then
