Former BRDC Stars of Tomorrow front-runner Henry Surtees has made a big leap forward in terms of his career by signing up to race with the crack Carlin Motorsport squad in the Formula BMW UK Championship in 2007.
The teenager – son of two-and-four-wheeled world champion and British A1GP team principal John Surtees – was a winner of the Formula BMW Scholarship last year, following a gruelling selection day at the Formula BMW Racing Centre in Valencia, Spain, overseen by a panel of judges that included 1992 Formula 1 title-winner Nigel Mansell. One of only six drivers to receive the prestigious honour, Henry has since undertaken a comprehensive pre-season testing programme ahead of the opening round of the series at Brands Hatch on 31 March.
Having competed last season in the Ginetta Championship, the ex-Junior Gearbox ace is clearly revved up for the challenge ahead, and will benefit over the course of the campaign from the coaching and tutelage of Stars' and Formula BMW old boy Sam Bird, who will be racing in Formula 3 in 2007. Surtees will partner fellow scholarship winner Oliver Webb at the Hampshire-based outfit, and has already impressed his bosses in winter testing.
"This is our fourth year of Formula BMW UK and the championship is now an important part of the Carlin team structure, taking young drivers into Formula 3 and beyond," remarked team principal Steve Hollman. "We have selected two Formula BMW Scholarship winning drivers, who both qualify for the Rookie Championship, but we will be pushing them to be podium finishers in the main race from the outset.
"Oli and Henry have completed over 10,000 miles between them in testing, so they are well-prepared for the start of the season. Sam knows what it takes to win a championship and, perhaps more importantly, what it takes not to lose one. Although the championship has in the past favoured second-year drivers, we hope to break this trend and challenge for race wins from the start of the season."
The Formula BMW Championship includes an Education and Coaching programme, covering all aspects a young driver needs to start a successful racing career. Previous graduates who have gone onto bigger and better things include Williams Formula 1 ace Nico Rosberg, German A1GP star Nico Hulkenberg and current Carlin drivers Niall Breen and Sebastian Vettel.
