hey,

my parents have bought a PS3 from America and have given it to me to test before i take it home to them.

i have seen old press releases saying that the PS3 was taking a step towards becoming more continent transferrable and wouldnt need an external voltage convertor as it has one built in.

does anyone know if this actually came into production? as the manual doesnt mention it and i dont want to blow up a new PS3 for a stupid mistake. the manual does say that it runs at 110V and 60Hz, but it could still do that if it had a convertor built in.

cheers in advance
chris

Works fine, don't worry about it. I know 3 people who've imported and none have had any issues.

cheers for the response. very useful.

its interesting then that the San Francisco Sony store said that it categorically would NOT work in the UK without a voltage convertor. i told my parents otherwise but i thought i should check it.

Quite a few folks on the AV forums have got US or Jap spec PS3's and all they have done is popped down PCWorld or the like an bought standard uk kettle plug leads.

The PS3 does indeed have a voltage convertor built in.

To save any question whatsoever - there will be a sticker on the PS3 itself which tells you the input voltage range.

One assumes it's 110 - 240V and thus will work fine.

to hijack slightly - if i buy one in Dubai, then im hoping that all media formats will be useable, as well as games, since they have the same format as us?

You've got me there, I'm not entirely sure... but I'll be flying via Dubai tomorrow, I'll go and check out the regions if I remember. Anyway, I hope you know that the PS3 is 8kg... enjoy lugging that around with your suitcase

I wussed out from getting one in Dubai. I managed to track down a 60G one for about £300 (Go down Meena Bizarre (sp)). I was told that there is a problem that they only play NTSC games, and all my PAL games would not work, so I decided against it.

I was assured that even if they say 100V on them, they have the multivoltage converter in them.

I've heard the same thing, the voltage is correct world wide, but an NTSC PS3 will only play NTSC games and vise versa for PAL machines...

well i can confirm that a US playstation runs fine on UK power. it is rather annoying to find that there isnt a HD cable in the box though. so i have to trek back down to currys and get an HDMI cable before i can finally see what HD looks like!

the machine itself looks very very nice. the controller is very much like the old ones but hte addition of hte long travel L2 and R2 buttons could be handy. all seems good so far.

No, please dont, as I am going to sulk terribly if I find out that I should have bought one after all!
