M3 M25 Slip Road - Ave speed camaras
Discussion
I cannot beleive they have installed average speed cameras on this slip road. I drive it every day and a chance to do more than 50 would be a joy. The slip road is too tight to go much faster and even when you do it's on the anchors for the queue as half the M25 tries to join the M3. The roadworks only last 0.5 miles!!! End of rant.
I went through this about 8am Friday last week when it was reasonably quiet.
Set the cruise to 50mph and bundled off the M25 and onto M3 s/b
Amazed at the amount of people who came thumping past me, only to slam on the anchors 500yds up the road when they saw the pole with the Camera on...
it's an AVERAGE SPEED camera you idiots, not AN AVERAGE Speed camera...

How long have these cameras been there?
I first saw the first of the pair up last Friday. The other set was up on Monday. I don't know if they are live.
I guess they are live now. Today I was passenger and realised I had my modified camera.......
I got lucky with the timing given my short my exposure; the lack of illumination for the left cam does not mean it is not live.

Their definately specs spec cameras, the IR illuminators can be clearly seen.

"M25 Junction 12 New Road Layout
Starting on the 5th March 2007 for one month we began carrying out a scheme to try and reduce congestion on the M25 at junction 12 and give road users a consistent and reliable journey time.
This scheme will provide an upgraded entry slip onto the M3 westbound. This will consist of two dedicated lanes for traffic joining from the M25 and a single lane for M3 westbound traffic.
Therefore, at the merge, the new layout will mean that the single lane of the M3 will be joined by two dedicated lanes from the M25. After this point, the M3 westbound will be restored to a three lane motorway.
Throughout the new layout a speed limit of 50 mph with average speed cameras will be in effect. On the M3 approach to the scheme, a vehicle activated sign will be erected to warn drivers of the 50 mph speed limit ahead should they be approaching too fast.
The first stage of the works will be to implement the new road layout with traffic cones and temporary signs.
The effect this revised layout has on the M25 and the M3 will be observed and if it proves to have the benefits predicted for the scheme, the signs and traffic cones will be replaced with a permanent scheme."

Really?
Did wonder how they cope with the merging of lanes etc round there.. Although so far it's been too busy to stand a chance of exceeding the limit when I have used that stretch. New lanes seem to make more sense though.

I go throught here everyday.. on the m3 part.. its really gettin me angry now.. still loads of people undertaking and slamming on brakes at the second camera aahhh!
Can anyone confirm about this changeing lanes rumour?!!

Well I also drive that junction every day on the way home from work and I have made a slight observation.
There are 2 camera's on the first M3 westbound setup pointing one at each lane.
There are 2 camera's on the M25 slip road, again pointing one at each lane.
There are 2 camera's on the final M3 gantry, very clearly pointing at lanes 2 & 3.
Not saying that you can speed through and move to lane 1 in advance of the final camera's, but I've been studying the setup and on the final gantry Camera 1 appears to point at lane 3, and camera 2 appears to be pointing at lane 2. Lane 1 appears to be "uncovered" at the exit of the scheme at this moment in time.
In fact you can see the camera setup in the picture above. Camera 1 is actually directly over the top of Lane 1 but you can see in the picture that each camera is pointing outwards. In fact it appears that camera 1 is setup pointing quite far up the road too (so all those late brakers in lane 3 will be having zero effect anyway)
same sort of thing on the m4, set cruise control to 49 mph and sit back, watching all the nice sports cars zipping past at 60-70 mph after flashing me
tend to sticvk to the limits rigidly around average speed cameras, might get past them a bit quiker and get held up on some other bit, so nothing to gain other than a nice set of points and for a cheap price of £60, thanx but no thanx

I've taken a few more shots over different day since my first (above). I've never seen the IR illuminators activated for either of the left SPECS cameras on the M3.
For the geeks: I've managed to get some great closeups, the IR illuminators seem to be simple incandescent bulbs with a low pass filter, not LED arrays.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand they're still there, I think the workmen have taken the money and run as no discernable work's been done on the junction either.
Probbaly just getting a revenue top up from the Easter travellers or maybe they have to earn enough money to complete the roadworks?
